Next Conservative Leader Odds: Who are the favourites before nominations open?

Conservative leader nominations open today as the first step towards selecting their new leader begins.

The Conservatives are set to embark on the first step of a three-month plan to elect a new leader following Rishi Sunak's announcement of his resignation after a historic landslide defeat in the general election.

Nominations open today, Wednesday, July 23rd, with candidates needing the support of at least 10 MPs to advance to the first round of voting. The initial pool of candidates will be reduced to four, who will then present their cases at the September Conservative Conference.

MPs will subsequently narrow the field to two finalists. The ultimate decision will be made through an online ballot by party members.

The new leader, set to replace Rishi Sunak, will be announced by November 2nd, 2024.

Lets take a look at some of the favourites before nominations begin today.

Who are the favourites to be the next Conservative Leader?

Kemi Badenoch, the current Shadow Housing Secretary, is the favourite to become the next Conservative Leader, with Betfred offering the best odds at 9/4.

Following Boris Johnson's resignation, Badenoch entered the first Tory leadership contest of 2022, where she ranked fourth out of eight candidates in the initial ballot among MPs. Despite this strong start, she was eliminated in the fourth round of voting.

Nonetheless, her no-nonsense, outspoken approach to issues such as women's rights, equality, and identity politics has garnered significant attention and respect within the party.

Robert Jenrick is her closest competition, with Ladbrokes offering the best odds at 4/1.

The former Immigration Minister made headlines last year by resigning in protest against the government’s Rwanda deportation scheme for asylum seekers, arguing that it was fundamentally flawed.

Tom Tugendhat is the next most likely candidate, with Sky Bet offering the best odds at 11/2.

The former Security Minister has recently received backing from two senior and influential members of the Conservative Party, Damian Green and Steve Baker, who believe that Tugendhat is the right man to bring unity to the party.

Tugendhat, who placed fifth behind Badenoch in the 2022 leadership contest, boasts five years as chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee and a decade of commendable military service.
