Heading into last week’s semi-finals, bookmakers had these two the other way around with South Africa the odds-on favourites to retain the World Cup and New Zealand at 11/10.

In terms of their pre-tournament odds, New Zealand had been level with France as 3/1 favourites, whereas South Africa were behind these two countries and Ireland at 5/1 odds.

Leon Blackman from oddschecker said: “These two heavyweights of Rugby Union go head-to-head to become the most decorated nation in the sport. With both teams currently tied on three World Cup victories, it adds another level of intrigue to an already fascinating match-up.

“Bookmakers have leaned towards New Zealand to lift the trophy after 90 minutes, a shift in favouritism, as heading into the semi-finals it was South Africa who were the betting favourites.

“Interestingly, South Africa had been the most popular bet to win the tournament up until the match vs England. Since then, the majority of punters have sided with the All Blacks to come out victorious on Saturday night.”
