Can Wales keep their Euro hopes alive in Trnava?
What an absolutely crucial game this is for Wales.
Croatia currently sit top of Group E with 10 points; Slovakia and Hungary are both just a single point behind them, while Wales are on six, with a game in hand. Only the top two qualify for Euro 2020.
The situation above them, Ryan Giggs will know that defeat on Thursday will deal a near-terminal blow to his side’s hopes of reaching the Euros, but I’ve not been particularly impressed with them.
Gareth Bale’s late winner at home to Azerbaijan last time out saved them from a catastrophic result, but the performance was worrying, and a trip to Slovakia will no doubt prove a much sterner test for the Welsh, particularly considering their record on the road – where they’ve lost against Croatia and Hungry.
Slovakia haven’t been particularly consistent themselves, and a 4-0 home defeat to Croatia will give the Welsh hope, however they followed that up with a crucial 2-1 away win at Hungary, so while it’s slightly tough to gauge just how good Slovakia are, their home advantage could be a decisive factor against the travel-sick Welsh.
Slovakia, who are playing at home and against a side who have lost both of their away games, seem a little overpriced at 6/4, and I think that’s a backable price considering Wales’ display against Azerbaijan.
