Betting Tip: Both Teams to Score

West Ham United make the trip to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in France to take on Lyon in the quarter-final of the Europa League (UEL). The first leg finished all square at the London Stadium, a result the French side would have surely taken prior to the start. However, the ‘Hammers’ went down to ten men just before halftime yet were still able to open the scoring through Jarrod Bowen before former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele levelled the score on his first return to London.

Peter Bosz’s side dominated the game even before Aaron Cresswell was given his marching orders, yet struggled to break down a resolute West Ham defensive unit. Lyon travelled to Strasbourg at the weekend and achieved another 1-1 draw but lost first-choice keeper Anthony Lopes through injury. Backup keeper Julian Pollersbeck looks set to start and he’s played just two full games so far this season.

Lyon have hit the back of the net in 19 of their 20 competitive matches on home soil this campaign and they can find ways of penetrating a possible makeshift West ham backline. However, the hosts are conceding plenty of goals at home and with the visitors needing to get on the scoresheet, I’ll happily have two points on both teams slotting once again here.

Betting Tip: Lyon Over 1.5 Team Goals

The hosts will be exceptionally disappointed that they were unable to capitalise on their man advantage and will be keen to get the job done in front of their own fans. They rested the defence that started the first leg for their trip to Strasbourg and withdrew the likes of Tetê, Houssem Aouar and Moussa Dembele in the second half, presumably with this match in mind.

David Moyes team arrive here unable to call on Angelo Ogbonna, Aaron Cresswell and possibly Kurt Zouma, who is doubtful after he limped off away to Brentford at the weekend. If so, the lefthand side of West ham’s defence looks as though it could be a weak point and if things click for Lyon, they could easily exploit that and score a couple of goals here. I’m surprised to see odds of 6/5 for ‘Les Gones’ to score two or more against a team that has conceded in 13 of their last 14 away matches across all competitions.
