Betting Tip: Tyler Adams to be carded

I’m going with two card-based picks for this clash between England and the USA. Gareth Southgate’s side got off to the perfect start as they put six past a poor Iran outfit and despite the scoreline, England were still fouled 14 times and the midfield two for Iran committed four of those.

The USA and Leeds United midfielder is not scared of getting stuck in and there is always a little bit of bite when these two take each other on. In his last four matches, Tyler Adams has committed 12 fouls and has made at least one foul in 11 of his 13 appearances for Leeds United this campaign.

He and Weston Mckennie are likely to be the ones tasked with spotting the danger, breaking up play and helping to build attacks. The referee is not exactly lenient and he should be awarding a fair few cards, as such, I think Tyler Adams could be one of the names to go into his book at 4/1.

Betting Tip: Over 3.5 Cards

It’s clear that I like cards in this game and I was surprised when I saw that the line was set at 3.5. Both sides showed immense intensity in the first half of their respective World Cup openers but showed a bit of a drop off after the interval.

However, both sides look set to be well up for this one and it could prove to be a frantic battle between two clubs looking to progress into the knockout stages of the competition. The USA committed 15 fouls against Wales and with all due respect to Rob Page’s side, England boast more technical personnel and that could mean the Americans rack up the foul count.

Not only has referee Jesus Valenzuela awarded a ridiculous amount of cards recently, he has also brandished seven reds across his last nine games officiated. The Venezuelan referee is not usually a man to let things go and hopefully, he’ll continue to be strict here and hand out four or more cards in total.

• James Maddison is training away from the squad at the moment and didn't feature against Iran. He is unlikely to start against the USA, but could feature on the bench
• Harry Maguire came off looking unwell and could be a minor doubt for the USA game, but he said on social media saying it was "just a precaution"
• Southgate could name an unchanged side to the XI he put out against Iran, following an impressive performance in all departments
• However, Harry Kane has a scan on an ankle injury sustained on Monday, so will be assessed

• Luca de la Torre has been recovering from a hamstring injury, but was available from the bench against Wales
