Manchester United’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages are hanging by a thread. Bayern Munich could pile on the misery here as they look to put a shocking defeat of their own behind them on Tuesday night.

Manchester United have struggled for consistency since the start of the season but the 3-0 loss at home to Bournemouth at the weekend represents a new low in the Erik Ten Hag era. The Red Devils’ lacked fight and were comprehensively beaten by a team that had never previously won at Old Trafford.
United have suffered plenty of injuries in the opening months of the campaign and it has undoubtedly impacted performance. However, there is a distinct lack of playing style when they take to the field. A few more disastrous results could spell the end for Ten Hag despite the success he enjoyed last season.
The Red Devils have looked frail defensively and lacked cutting edge in the attacking third for several months. Ten Hag appears to have asked his more advanced midfielders to join the attack and aid the press but this has left a lone holding midfielder covering too much ground so the gaps have been there to exploit.
Bayern suffered an equally embarrassing defeat at the weekend when they were beaten 5-1 by Eintracht Frankfurt. Thomas Tuchel has recognised the need for reinforcements in the defensive third and it appears as though the club will back him in January. The former Chelsea manager has a track record of success and he could lead Bayern to glory in the Champions League this season.
Harry Kane has come in and addressed the goals issue from last season. The England captain has been clinical and looks set to smash the Bundesliga scoring record set by Robert Lewandowski. Nevertheless, Bayern need to get the balance right before the knockout stages of this tournament begin. They’ve already secured safe passage to the round of 16 but they will be expecting tougher tests.
The reverse fixture between these sides saw seven goals as Bayern Munich ran out 4-3 winners at the Allianz Arena. The German side could rest some players here but whoever starts will be going full throttle to avoid consecutive defeats so I’m backing both teams to score and over 2.5 goals in the match.
