Hull vs Birmingham – Hull

An all Championship FA Cup tie as Hull welcome managerless Birmingham.

Hull sit just outside the play-offs by a point, but three defeats in their last four hasn’t helped their cause. A home tie against a currently manageless Birmingham side might have come at a bad time, following the struggles under Wayne Rooney.

Rooney lasted just under three months at Birmingham, and the search for his permanent successor continues to go on (at the time of writing). Sometimes with sides who are in a rut, a managerial change can reinvigorate a team, and Birmingham fans travelling to Hull would hope so.

However, we can’t see how they get the win here. Hull have won five of their last seven at home and after all, there’s a reason they are just outside the play-offs. Hull through to the 4th round without the need of a replay is our prediction for this one.

Gillingham vs Sheffield United – Sheffield United

Sheffield United travel to Gillingham for their 3rd round game.

The League Two side will be hoping for a big upset against Premier League opposition who might see their focuses elsewhere. Gillingham are in the hunt for the play-offs to League One and a win here could gain some helpful momentum after back to back wins. They saw off League One Charlton back in December to reach the third round.

After the dire season they’ve had, many fans will forget that the Blades reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup last season, before being dumped out by eventual winners Manchester City. They went out to lower league opposition in the Carabao Cup in Lincoln Town, and will hope that a similar upset is repeated.

Chris Wilder’s side should have enough quality to find an elusive win, and we’ll back them to do so.

Newport County vs Eastleigh – Newport County

It’s League Two against National League as Newport County welcome Eastleigh.

Newport have won just one of their last six games, so Eastleigh might come here with hope of an upset and a space in the 4th round.

The visitors are 12th of 24 in the National League, conceding the 4th most goals in the division, and Newport might take advantage of those frailties.

The League Two side should progress given the league positions between them and Eastleigh.

QPR vs Bournemouth - Bournemouth

Finally, high flying Bournemouth travel to Loftus Road to play QPR.

QPR looked to have been turning a corner under new manager Martí Cifuentes, but no wins in their last six games seems to have turned that around. They do have the chance to turn their fortunes around, with five successive home games this month. They got off to the worst possible start after a defeat to Cardiff on New Year’s Day.

After an impressive December, which has seen Dominic Solanke, Marcos Senesi and Andoni Iraola been nominated for individual awards, they look to progress in the FA Cup alongside their Premier League rise. Their longest winning run of the campaign came to an end as they lost to Tottenham on New Year’s Eve.
