England’s preparations for the European Championships ramp up on Saturday as they take on the five-time World Cup winners, Brazil. The Three Lions are favourites for this match but need to show they can topple the best sides as this summer’s tournament edges closer.

England will be without a few big-name players but they still have plenty of quality in their ranks. Harry  Kane is expected to be sidelined with an ankle injury so this is a great opportunity for Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney to stake their claim in attack. 

Gareth Southgate’s side were beaten in the final of the last European Championships. They took an early lead in the final against Italy thanks to Luke Shaw but were unable to build on that advantage. Their cautious approach saw them fall agonisingly short via a penalty shootout. England won’t want to make that mistake again. 

It’s been a turbulent time for Brazil. Fernando Diniz had an unsuccessful stint as interim boss so the team find themselves on the back foot in the South American World Cup qualifiers. Rumours have swirled about Carlo Ancelotti for a number of years but Dorival has been given the nod.

Dorival has been a journeyman in the Brazilian league and leading the national team is undoubtedly the highlight of his career. He will be without several key players for this one. They have several absentees in the defensive third and will have to rely on a third-choice goalkeeper. Neymar is also unavailable. Dorival previously worked with a 20-year-old Neymar at Santos. A disagreement between the pair led to the manager getting the boot.

Brazil have lost their last three matches. They were beaten 1-0 at home by Argentina in their last match. Their last game on the road was a 2-1 defeat against Colombia. The Selecao hadn’t lost two consecutive matches since the semi-finals and third-place playoff of the 2014 World Cup. You have to go back as far as 2001 to see them lose four matches in a row but they are up against it here.

England are unbeaten in their last 20 matches at Wembley during the 90 minutes of regulation time. They have scored 15 goals across their last five home matches and have several attackers who are in excellent form at club level coming into this game. Southgate gets criticised for being too pragmatic in his approach but his team still boast an incredible scoring record. They have scored an average of 2.44 goals per home game under Gareth.

Brazil have conceded two goals in their last two away matches against Colombia and Uruguay respectively.
