Manchester City were unable to follow up their 4-0 win over Newcastle with another victory as the Premier League champions crashed out of the Champions League at Real Madrid's expense in midweek.

Pep Guardiola's side have been wholly inconsistent in recent weeks, winning three and losing three of their last six in all competitions.

Darwin Nunez's late miss at Aston Villa on Wednesday night means Liverpool have won just one of their last four in all competitions.

The Reds have also won only two of their last eight away matches, and have failed to win in three on the road, drawing the last two at Everton and Aston Villa respectively.

To compound matters, Liverpool don't have a great record at the Etihad Stadium having last won at City in the league back in 2015.

They have beaten City at the Etihad since then as they claimed a 2-1 Champions League win in Manchester back in 2018.

Liverpool's lead at the top of the Premier League table is currently at eight points heading into the weekend's action, though they have now played one game more than title rivals Arsenal at the time of writing.

It's imperative for Liverpool they avoid defeat on Sunday afternoon to maintain their title push.

City would love nothing more than to dent the Reds' charge for domestic glory, and they may do so with the spoils potentially shared in this Super Sunday showdown.
