Group A Introduction

Group A of the 2026 FIFA World Cup takes place from June 11 to 24, consisting of co-hosts Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, and Czechia. With all group stage games played on Mexican soil, El Tri carry an enormous home advantage, but this is a more competitive group than the seedings suggest. At least three teams have a genuine shot at the knockout stages, making second place very much up for grabs. The final round of matches on June 24 could dramatically reshape the standings, with qualification spots likely still on the line.

Team Profiles

Mexico

FIFA Ranking: 15
Manager: Javier Aguirre
Star Player: Raul Jimenez

Odds to Win Group A: 4/6 (implied probability: ~60%)
Odds to Win Tournament: 80/1 (implied probability: ~1.2%)

Javier Aguirre leads a Mexico side whose best World Cup results came at the 1970 and 1986 editions, both of which they hosted. Mexico have made every World Cup since 1994 without progressing beyond the Round of 16, but as co-hosts they'll be hoping 2026 is the year they can produce a run to the latter stages.

The organizers have clearly built the bracket with Mexico in mind, placing the Round of 32 match for the Group A winner at the Azteca, along with the potential Round of 16 fixture too, giving El Tri every possible logistical advantage. Jimenez is third on Mexico's all-time scoring list with 44 goals and has been prolific for his country of late, scoring seven times across seven appearances in the Gold Cup and Nations League, even if his World Cup record remains a frustration.

A 1-1 draw with Belgium and 0-0 with Portugal in 2026 friendlies suggest Aguirre's side can hold their own against quality opposition, even if questions remain about the squad's depth at the business end of the tournament. At 80/1 for the tournament, Mexico are not serious outright value, but in a home group they absolutely should be winning, and the Round of 16 at the Azteca is a very realistic ceiling.

South Korea

FIFA Ranking: 25
Manager: Hong Myung-bo
Star Player: Son Heung-min

Odds to Win Group A: 7/2 (implied probability: ~22%)
Odds to Win Tournament: 200/1 (implied probability: ~0.5%)

Ranked 25th in the world by FIFA as of April 2026, this is South Korea's 12th World Cup overall. They qualified unbeaten through the AFC third round, with six wins and four draws across 10 matches. Son Heung-min has called on his side not to show stronger opponents excessive respect, urging belief as the Koreans look to make a real statement.

The 33-year-old is joint-top scorer for South Korea at World Cups with three goals and gears up for his fourth tournament appearance. Lee Kang-in of PSG and Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae bring additional European quality to a squad that is more than capable of the Round of 32 and beyond. Coach Hong Myung-bo is a legendary former captain who led the national team to the 2002 semi-finals and will aim to bring that same tournament nous to this generation.

At 200/1 for the tournament, South Korea are a long shot, but they are genuinely competitive within this group. A second-place finish is realistic, and their odds to qualify are arguably where the value sits.

Czechia

FIFA Ranking: 36
Manager: Miroslav Koubek
Star Player: Patrik Schick

Odds to Win Group A: 10/3 (implied probability: ~23%)
Odds to Win Tournament: 500/1 (implied probability: ~0.2%)

Miroslav Koubek, at 74, is the oldest coach at the 2026 World Cup. Czechia ended a 20-year wait to reach the finals, surviving two penalty shootouts in the playoffs. Patrik Schick is Czechia's main attacking threat, having scored 25 goals in 52 appearances for the national team.

The spine of the side is settled and clear: Matej Kovar in goal, Tomas Holes in defence, Tomas Soucek in midfield, and Schick leading the line. Czechia scored seven goals from corners in European qualifying, more than any other team on the continent, making them a constant threat from set pieces. They arrived having beaten the Republic of Ireland and Denmark across two playoff shootouts, which tells you about the character in this group.

At 500/1 to win the tournament, there is little value there, but as the second-most likely to win Group A, a bet on Czechia to qualify from the group is worth considering.

South Africa

FIFA Ranking: 60
Manager: Hugo Broos
Star Player: Ronwen Williams

Odds to Win Group A: 12/1 (implied probability: ~7%)
Odds to Win Tournament: 2000/1 (implied probability: ~0.05%)

Ronwen Williams captains the side and brings 62 caps to the tournament, the most of any player in the squad. Ranked 60th in the world by FIFA, Bafana Bafana return to football's biggest stage for the first time in 16 years. Co-incidently, they played the same opponents (Mexico) in their opening game this season, as they did when they last hosted the World Cup in 2010.

South Africa topped a competitive CAF qualifying group ahead of Nigeria, sealing their place with a 3-0 win over Rwanda. It will be their fourth World Cup appearance, having featured in 1998, 2002 and 2010, but they have never advanced past the group stage. Hugo Broos, undertaking his final job in management, led them to a fourth-place finish at the 2023 AFCON and has drilled a compact, disciplined side built almost entirely on domestic talent, with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates providing the core of the squad.

Lyle Foster of Burnley will be known to Premier League fans as the main attacking outlet, while Ronwen Williams anchored a goalkeeper who saved four penalties in a single AFCON shootout in 2023. At 2000/1 to win the tournament, South Africa are not seriously fancied anywhere beyond surprising one of the group's other three teams on the right day.

Who is Favourite to Win Group A?

Mexico enter the tournament as deserved Group A favourites. Home support, familiarity with the conditions and a squad boasting considerably more tournament experience than their rivals make El Tri the team to beat.

Behind them, however, the picture becomes far less clear. Czechia and South Korea are separated by very little in the betting markets, reflecting what could be one of the tightest battles for qualification across the group stage. South Africa begin as outsiders, but in a World Cup format where momentum can change quickly, they cannot be completely discounted.
