The first men’s World Cup match ever played on Canadian soil takes centre stage on Friday as co-hosts Canada face Bosnia-Herzegovina at Toronto Stadium. Jesse Marsch’s side arrive unbeaten in eight matches and have kept six clean sheets during that run, building momentum despite uncertainty surrounding captain Alphonso Davies.

Canada are still searching for their first-ever World Cup victory after losing all six previous matches at the tournament. Bosnia-Herzegovina, meanwhile, return to the finals for only the second time after stunning Italy in the playoffs and are also unbeaten in eight games. With both sides carrying impressive defensive records, goals could be at a premium in this Group B opener.

A stalemate appeals in Toronto. Canada may have home advantage, but Jesse Marsch's side have hardly been free-scoring in recent months, netting just nine goals across their last 10 matches. Three of those games finished 0-0, while narrow 1-0 victories over Wales and Guatemala underline how difficult they can find it to break opponents down. The potential absence of captain Alphonso Davies would further reduce their attacking threat.

Bosnia-Herzegovina are equally difficult to beat. Sergej Barbarez's men are unbeaten in eight matches and have built their recent success on defensive solidity, conceding one goal or fewer in each of their last six internationals. They also kept first-half clean sheets in all six of those games, highlighting their ability to stay organised and frustrate opponents.

Both nations enter the tournament on eight-match unbeaten runs, suggesting there is little between them. Bosnia's route to the finals saw them eliminate both Wales and Italy in the playoffs, proving they can compete with stronger opposition, while Canada are still searching for their first-ever World Cup victory after losing all six previous matches at the tournament.

Both sides will be just as happy without the ball as they would be with it. There will be a lot of direct football and long balls as well as crosses into the box. With both teams taking a similar approach it could result in them both cancelling each other out here.

With Canada often involved in low-scoring contests and Bosnia likely to adopt a cautious approach in their opening group game, this has all the ingredients of a tight and tense encounter.

Who is favourite to win in Canada vs Bosnia-Herzegovina?

Canada are narrow favourites at 9/10 (AKbets), implying the bookmakers believe the co-hosts have around a 53% chance of making a winning start on home soil in Toronto. Their unbeaten run in 2026 and home advantage have helped push them to the head of the market despite their poor historical World Cup record.

The draw is priced at 13/5, suggesting the market sees the visitors as capable of causing problems. Bosnia arrive on an eight-match unbeaten run of their own and have built a reputation for being difficult to break down, which helps explain why the draw remains a prominent contender in the betting.

Bosnia are 39/10 to win.

Derek Cornelius to be Carded

Cornelius is likely to spend plenty of time up against Edin Džeko, who draws the most fouls in the Bosnia side, averaging 1.82 per game across his last seven appearances for the national team.

Džeko fouls won: 2, 0, 2, 3, 3, 2, 1, 1, 1, 3

Canada press aggressively and look to win the ball high up the pitch. With two physical strikers available, Bosnia are likely to bypass that pressure by playing direct balls forward, creating plenty of one-on-one duels with Canada's defenders. Of those defenders, Derek Cornelius looks the most likely to get involved physically.

He has been carded in both of Canada's warm-up games against Ireland and Uzbekistan, while he has also picked up cards in four of his last five starts for Canada. Cornelius didn't play a great deal for Rangers this season, making just eight starts, but still managed to collect three bookings.

Bosnia will also look to exploit Canada's lack of pace in transition. When they lose possession, Canada can struggle to recover quickly and deal with counter-attacks, meaning Cornelius may be forced into a tactical foul at some stage.

Jonathan David 3+ Fouls Won

Everything flows through Jonathan David in this Canada side. When they break forward, they generally do so through David, who is almost always at the centre of their attacking play.

Bosnia are expected to deploy a man-marking system, and with the pace and technical ability David possesses, that could lead to plenty of fouls on Canada's key creative outlet. Bosnia will know that if they want to stop Canada's attacks, they need to stop David.

David has drawn 2+ fouls in five of his last nine appearances for Canada.

David will also be tasked with leading Jesse Marsch's high press. Canada are happy to play without the ball, pressing from opposition goal kicks and looking to force mistakes high up the pitch. That is where they enjoyed much of their success during qualification. As we saw in the Mexico game on Thursday night, this style can lead to plenty of defensive fouls as teams scramble to recover possession.

Richie Laryea 2+ Fouls Committed

Bosnia's best chance of scoring is likely to come from wide areas. Edin Džeko may no longer have the mobility he once did, but his aerial ability remains a major threat.

Bosnia's wingers, Esmir Bajraktarević (21) and Kerim Alajbegović (18), possess the directness and crossing ability to complement Džeko's strengths in the air, so Bosnia will almost certainly look to utilise them. Bajraktarević, in particular, looks a strong source of crosses, averaging just over six per 90 minutes across his last seven appearances. Amar Dedić, operating at right-back, has supplied the third-most crosses on average in the Bosnia side, so expect that flank to be heavily involved.

Dedić is the second-most fouled player in the Bosnia squad behind Džeko, while Ermedin Demirović has drawn 2+ fouls in four of his last seven appearances.

Naturally, that makes Canada's right-back position of interest in the fouls market, and it just so happens to be occupied by Canada's most frequent fouler in Richie Laryea.

Laryea foul count for Canada: 0, 3, 2, 4, 2, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2.

Canada vs Bosnia-Herzegovina Prop Betting Tip

Recommended bet: Derek Cornelius 2+ Fouls
Best odds: 11/8 (Ladbrokes)
Advised Stake: 1pt

If you don't want to risk getting involved in the yellow card market, then Cornelius to get 2+ fouls also appeals. We have established that he should be busy up against Bosnia's direct long balls to their physical forwards so fouls can be expected.

Cornelius has committed 2+ fouls in 4 of his last 11 internationals and 1+ in 7 of them and with the stakes higher than all of those, the chances of 2 fouls are solid.
