England head into their final Group L fixture at the 2026 World Cup knowing the equation is simple: take care of business and top the group. After a strong opening win over Croatia was followed by a frustrating stalemate against Ghana, Thomas Tuchel’s side are now in a position where a win is crucial here, with knockout-stage positioning potentially shaping their entire route through the tournament.

Opponents Panama arrive at MetLife Stadium already eliminated, having come up short in both of their opening games. While their organisation and defensive discipline have kept scores tight, a lack of attacking threat has left them unable to turn defensive steel into results, and their World Cup journey will end here regardless of what happens in New Jersey.

On paper, it is a stark mismatch. England’s challenge is less about opposition quality and more about breaking down a low, compact block in a game they are expected to control from the outset. Panama, meanwhile, will be playing for pride, hoping to frustrate a side still searching for consistency in the final third.

Panama vs England Best Bets

Recommended Bet: Panama Over 13.5 Fouls
Best Odds: 11/10 (BetMGM)
Advised Stake: 1pt

This line looks slightly low given the way Panama are expected to approach this game.

Panama have already shown a clear tendency to rack up disciplinary pressure when forced into a deep defensive block. Against Croatia they committed 19 fouls.

They followed that with 11 against Ghana. However, it should be noted that they dominated possession against Ghana (62%) which is unusual for them, and perhaps partly the reason why the line is so low here.

England are expected to dominate possession heavily, similar to their 79% share against Ghana, which naturally forces opponents into repeated late challenges, tactical fouls, and reactive defending around the edge of the box.

England tend to draw fouls in volume in games like these - they won 24 fouls against Ghana, 12 against Croatia, and 24 against Costa Rica. Opponents are frequently forced into stopping transitions or breaking up attacking moves.

Panama’s expected 5-4-1 low block compresses space centrally, meaning England’s attacks will funnel into congested areas where fouls are often the only release valve. With little attacking threat, Panama are going to be forced to defend aggressively.

With England also needing a win here expect relentless attacks and a fast start, we could see the foul count creep up early in the game.

Who is the favourite in Panama vs England?

England are overwhelming favourites for this Group L clash, priced at 2/11 (Starsports).

Panama are 19/1 (AKbets) outsiders with the draw at 8/1 (AKBets), but their tournament trend of back-to-back 1-0 defeats and a lack of goals suggests they may struggle to threaten even a rotated England backline.

Even with potential squad rotation from Thomas Tuchel, England’s attacking core - led by players like Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham - has already shown it can break down structured defences when space opens up, as seen in the 4-2 win over Croatia.

Panama’s compact 5-4-1 block may frustrate early phases, but sustained pressure and superior individual quality should tilt the game heavily in England’s favour, with the only real question being the margin of victory rather than the outcome.

  • Marc Guehi 2+ Fouls Won
  • Declan Rice Assist
  • Elliot Anderson 3+ Tackles

Marc Guehi 2+ Fouls Won

Marc Guehi drew 7 fouls against Ghana and two against New Zealand in a WC warm up game, which is hard to ignore in a game which looks set to play out tactically in a similar manner.

Guehi is great at drawing fouls and relieving pressure, he has done so for Man City and Palace all season - he drew 2+ fouls in six of his last eight Premier League games.

He isn't afraid of carrying the ball - he had the most final third entries (20) in the game against Ghana - and constantly invites contact.

With Panama expected to sit back like Ghana, you can expect him to play a similar role.

Declan Rice Assist or Bukayo Saka Assist

Rice's set pieces weren't quite up to par against Ghana, but you rarely see that stretch two games in a row.

He said himself: "I feel like now every time I put down a ball for a set-piece - whether it's a corner or a wide free-kick - I feel like I'm going to get an assist or make something happen that's dangerous."

And the numbers back it up. He has created a massive 10 shooting chances at the World Cup now. The next best in the England side is Madueke with 4.

He already has one assist against Croatia, and in a game where England have to score and could get more than one goal, you have to back him to be in or around the action when it happens.

If Rice is rested Saka is a solid replacement. He has two assists in his last six England games including one against Croatia despite playing just 18 minutes. He also picked up eight assists for Arsenal this season.

Elliot Anderson 3+ Tackles

Anderson has been amongst the action so far at the World Cup - he has 10 foul involvements and has made 5 tackles across the first two games.

Oppositions sides against Panama have made 16+ tackles in each of their last three games, including Croatia who made 19 in their most recent game.

Four of those came through Croatia's midfield pair Kovacic and Modric

Anderson will be crucial, as always, in being the first line of defence as Panama look to play out of their low block.

Recommended Bet: Nico O'Reilly Headed Shot On Target
Best Odds: 7/2 (10bet)
Advised Stake: 0.5pt

Nico O'Reilly really should have scored with a header against Croatia in the opener in a game in which he managed two shots with his head.

He had another shot against Ghana with a header despite playing just 24 minutes.

These stats aren't anomolies either, he averaged the most headed shots for Man City in the last 20 games of the season, and hit the target with his head in eight of the last 15 games for City.
