The knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway on Sunday as co-hosts Canada face South Africa in Los Angeles, with both nations aiming to make more history. Canada progressed from Group B after an impressive campaign that included a six-goal demolition of Qatar, while Bafana Bafana completed a remarkable turnaround to reach the knockout rounds for the first time, recovering from an opening defeat to finish second in Group A.

Having met only once before - a South Africa friendly victory back in 2007 - this is their first competitive meeting and the first time the sides have faced each other on the World Cup stage. With a place in the last 16 on the line and both teams chasing a landmark achievement, an intriguing contest awaits in Inglewood.

Canada look well placed to make home advantage count and reach the last 16 in what is a landmark occasion for both nations.

While South Africa deserve huge credit for reaching the knockout stages for the first time in their history, their underlying performances suggest they have ridden their luck at times. Bafana Bafana created just two big chances across their three group matches. Both their draw against Czechia and their disasterous performance against Mexico in the opener exposed a side that can lack shape and ideas at times. Their hearted performance against South Korea gives reason for optimism but once again it exposed a side that really struggles in the final third.

The pressure was off South Africa against South Korea, this was a nation with nothing to lose and everything to gain and they played like it.

Jesse Marsch won't really know what to expect with this South Africa side after that performance, but the eyes of the world are back on South Africa now, and though everything beyond this point is a bonus, you can't help but feel this is a high pressure environment for them.

Canada, meanwhile, have looked far more threatening going forward despite not always being clinical. Jesse Marsch's side have created 11 big chances during the group stage, missing seven of them, which highlights that they are consistently getting into dangerous attacking positions. Jonathan David's hat-trick against Qatar demonstrated the attacking quality Canada possess when those chances begin to fall.

The absence of Ismael Koné and Alphonso Davies is a blow, but Canada have still shown they can function effectively without them, scoring eight goals in the group stage and facing a South African side that will likely spend long periods defending deep.

South Africa have improved significantly since their opening defeat to Mexico, but this is another step up in class against a Canada side playing in front of what should be a heavily supportive crowd - a similar environment to the one they crumbled to in Mexico City.

With greater attacking firepower, superior chance creation and the confidence of already producing one of the tournament's standout performances, Canada look the most likely winners in Los Angeles.

Who is the favourite in South Africa vs Canada?

The bookmakers make Canada clear favourites at 3/4, with South Africa priced up as 9/2 outsiders and the draw available at 13/5.

Canada’s price is likely driven by their greater attacking output and ability to consistently generate chances across the group stage, even if their 6-0 win over Qatar slightly flatters them and the absence of Alphonso Davies limits their full attacking ceiling. Jonathan David’s form and their settled defensive unit still give them a strong platform in knockout football at home.

South Africa, meanwhile, arrive with momentum after a resilient group-stage turnaround, but the numbers still lean against them - they have created very few big chances and relied heavily on a compact, counter-attacking structure and key moments rather than sustained pressure.

  • Jonathan David 2+ Fouls Won
  • Thapelo Maseko 2+ Shots

Best price 5/1 with Paddy Power at the time of publishing.

Richie Laryea 2+ Fouls Committed

Canada's Left side of defence could be busy up against South Africa's Thapelo Maseko, who has drawn a massive seven fouls in two games so far at this world cup.

He is supported by right back Khuliso Mudau who has drawn three fouls this tournament.

We will see South Africa's most fouled and third most fouled players up against Canada's most frequent fouler.

Richie Laryea Fouls Committed: 2, 0, 0, 0, 3, 2, 4, 2, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 3, 3

Jonathan David 2+ Fouls Won

Everything flows through Jonathan David in this Canada side. When they break forward, they generally do so through David, who is almost always at the centre of their attacking play.

We saw this against Switzerland, a game in which he drew 3 fouls against a

David has drawn 2+ fouls in five of his last 10 appearances for Canada.

Against a physical midfield and a mistake prone back line that have been forced into recovery fouls a number of times this tournament, Jonathan looks set to be involved in some physical duels.

Sithole and Mokoena, both midfielders, rank 2 and 3 for fouls committed for South Africa.

David will also be tasked with leading Jesse Marsch's high press. Canada are happy to play without the ball, pressing from opposition goal kicks and looking to force mistakes high up the pitch. I am sure they will look to exploit South Africa's shakey back line.

Thapelo Maseko 2+ Shots

Maseko comes into this knockout tie on the back of a standout performance against South Korea, where he led the game with 5 shots and had the most touches in the opposition penalty box. That wasn’t an outlier either - he had 3 shots against Czechia.

Not to mention, he had the best day of his career. He caused South Korea problems throughout and scored one of the biggest goals in his nation's history.

South Africa’s attack is heavily built around transition moments, and Maseko is the primary outlet when they break forward. Against a Canada side that will likely dominate possession, those counter-attacking opportunities should still fall to him.

Recommended Bet: Richie Laryea to be Carded
Best Odds: 9/2 (bet365)
Advised Stake: 0.75pt

If you are looking for a solid card bet, I think Laryea to be carded could be the angle.

Laryea's flank looks set to be the focal point of this game.

The Canada left back is in for a busy night - he is up against Thapelo Maseko, who is off the back of perhaps the biggest performance of his career and consistently drawing a high volume of fouls.

Supported by Mudau who also draws fouls, Laryea could have a long night ahead.
