Lyon to win at Sparta Prague – 21/20
Sparta have home advantage and a head start on match sharpness, having already played twice this season, but their history against French opposition is grim reading - six meetings with Lyon, five defeats and not a single win. Paulo Fonseca's side arrive short on rhythm after a heavy pre-season loss to Real Betis, but their pedigree in two-legged ties is hard to ignore: they haven't lost the first leg of a European tie in nine attempts stretching back to 2017. With Lois Openda fresh off a loan move from Juventus and ready to lead the line, Lyon look the class side here even away from home.
Olympiacos to beat NEC – 1/2
Neither side arrives in great pre-season nick, but Olympiacos have the far stronger pedigree at this level, reaching the knockout play-offs in last season's competition. NEC, by contrast, are newcomers to Champions League qualifying and have lost four of seven warm-up games, with key men Koki Ogawa and Perr Schuurs both missing. Ayoub El Kaabi already has a goal in pre-season and leads a front line that should have enough in front of a home crowd in Piraeus to see off a NEC side who leak goals for fun - conceding in every single one of their friendlies this summer.
Union SG vs Bodo/Glimt – draw
Union SG open the defence of their Champions League place fresh from Belgium Super Cup glory, edging Club Brugge on penalties, while Bodo/Glimt arrive full of confidence on the back of six straight wins and a run of Eliteserien form that's seen them concede nothing since the winter break. The Norwegians showed last season they're capable of anything in Europe, having knocked out Inter Milan en route to the round of 16. Two well-matched sides both riding good form points to a share of the spoils in Belgium.
