Football expert Ryan Elliott has a juicy 4/1 tip for Rangers' tough assignment in Western Germany.
Bayer Leverkusen’s emphatic 3-1 victory at Ibrox feels like a lifetime ago, and while Steven Gerrard’s men aren’t totally out of the European picture just yet, it’s fair to say the odds are stacked against them to qualify for the next round of the competition.
While Rangers need to score at least three goals to stand a chance of qualifying (a 2-0 win will see them crash out on away goals), their opponents are by far the best outfit they will have played this season.
Peter Bosz’s men, with their swaggering, passing style of football, won six of their last eight Bundesliga home games—falling only against Wolfsburg and Bayern—while they also beat Atletico Madrid at BayArena in the Champions League way back in November.
The hosts will be desperate to win this, particularly after agonisingly missed out on Champions League football on the final day of the domestic season.
Furthermore, Rangers have also managed to only win one of their last five European away games (beating Braga, drawing to Legia Warsaw, Porto and Feyenoord while losing to Young Boys), so to go and tonk Leverkusen looks highly improbable.
However, I’m going for a slightly longer-priced tip here, where I believe 4/1 for centre-back Connor Goldson to be booked is brilliant value.
Considering he was shown seven yellow cards in the league last season, and is up against Kevin Volland and Kai Havertz, it’s well worth taking 4s for the a booking.
It’s a bit of a free hit as far as Rangers are concerned, and Goldson will have no qualms about taking one for the team if the opportunity presents itself.
