Can Sean Dyche be Liverpool's Premier League saviour?
At the risk of sounding like a contrarian, has this season’s title race has become a little…dull?
The achievements of Manchester City and Liverpool this season are simply staggering, but with neither side looking likely to drop any points for the remainder of the season, will this all end in anti-climactic fashion? Where’s the jeopardy?
Well, one gravelly-voiced geezer who loves a bit of jeopardy is Sean Dyche. The Burnley manager has the opportunity to blow this season’s title race wide open, and preventing Manchester City from winning on Sunday would do just that.
The Clarets played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Monday, and considering City have just one win from their last three visits to Turf Moor, a huge, league-defining upset cannot be totally ruled out.
Many believe City’s efficient victories against Spurs and Manchester United have pretty much confirmed the destination of this year’s title, but Pep Guardiola will have made sure feet are firmly planted on the ground ahead of this trip to Lancashire.
I think City will do it, but I don’t expect it to be particularly comfortable. Burnley are unbeaten in four, and they have the capability to frustrate the champions.
City score a lot of early goals, but 18/5 for a draw at half-time and an away win at full-time does look fairly tempting.
Next, I’m backing over 10.5 corners at evens.
In their 11 matches against non-top six opponents, we’ve seen over 10 corners seven times.
Considering Burnley aren’t afraid to invite pressure, you’d expect Manchester City—who average 8.06 corners-per-match—to do most of the legwork. Either way, evens looks a good price.
Manchester City have won seven matches 3-1 this season, while a 3-1 defeat is Burnley’s joint-most common home scoreline – so that’s what I’m tipping as a longshot.
Though City have kept clean sheets in four of their last five league matches, Burnley have failed to score in just one of their last 12 games, making 12/1 look very juicy.
