Manchester United aim to stop the rot in crucial clash with Chelsea.
Despite Manchester United’s recent ineptitude, they’re still very much in the hunt for the top four—primarily due to the equally patchy form of Arsenal and Chelsea—and victory against Maurizio Sarri’s men at Old Trafford would put United in an incredibly strong position, particularly with Huddersfield and Cardiff their two remaining fixtures.
This one is very hard to call. Despite losing seven of their last nine matches, I do think United are my favourites to win, and their performance against Manchester City on Wednesday—despite the hysterical post-match criticism—was actually competitive, especially in the first half.
And while United have been poor in general since that incredible night in Paris, Chelsea’s away form has been simply atrocious. The Blues have lost five of their last seven on the road in the Premier League (the two wins coming against Fulham and Cardiff – the latter of which they deserved to lose), all of which without scoring; that’s not top four form.
For this reason, I’m going to back Manchester United to win. United have won their last two matches against Chelsea at Old Trafford, and it’s easy to forget that prior to the City defeat, the hosts had won seven of their last nine at home in the league.
Next, I’m tipping the scores to be level at half-time.
Eight of Chelsea’s 17 away matches have been level at the break, and with so much on the line, I don’t imagine either side will open up too much in order to strike a killer blow early on.
United have gone into half-time level on six occasions at Old Trafford this season, which is why I like 6/5 for a bit of value.
My last tip is for under 2.5 goals.
12 of the last 16 meetings between these two have seen under 2.5 goals.
Combine this with Chelsea’s struggles to find the net on the road, and you have a very solid bet priced just over evens.
