Can Spurs rise to the task at Fortress Anfield?
Liverpool v Spurs is a fixture which has given us plenty of drama in recent years. Ignoring the fairly dull Champions League final, it’s the Premier League where these two have really produced the memorable moments. The last-gasp Toby Alderweireld own-goal at Anfield last season to gift Liverpool a victory; the crazy 2-2 draw (once again at Anfield) with Harry Kane’s 95th minute penalty squaring things up – it’s a game which is always worth watching.
This season, the two sides have enjoyed significantly contrasting fortunes. Liverpool’s thunderous start to the season has obviously not gone unnoticed, while Spurs are still without an away victory – is this the time they finally break that duck?
Of course, this away record cannot be seen as remotely impressive, but their run does include a couple of 2-2 draws away at Manchester City and Arsenal. While there’s something awry within Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, there’s still perhaps a sense they can still turn it on when they travel to the big boys.
However, Liverpool—and this is in no way an exaggeration—are unbeatable at Anfield. They simply don’t lose, and while Spurs did return to winning ways against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League, I can’t envisage Liverpool dropping points against their inconsistent opponents.
The hosts are a measly 11/20 to win, which is an awful price, but there’s value in backing the Reds to win by a single goal at 3/1.
Liverpool are still without a clean sheet at home in any competition this season, and this is why I believe Spurs can make a decent fist of this; Liverpool’s last two Premier League wins against Spurs have also both been by two goals to one, so that’s worth bearing in mind.
Despite their Premier League form, I’m banking on Poch’s boys raising their game for this – and I expect them to go down fighting by just a single goal.
As I mentioned, Liverpool’s defence isn’t what it was last season – and I’d be a little surprised if Spurs fired a blank on the back of this.
Therefore, as a 7/1 price-boosted longshot, I’m backing Harry Kane to assist a Spurs goal.
We all know about Kane’s goalscoring, but the World Cup Golden Boot winner’s creativity is hugely underrated; I’ve not seen many out-and-out strikers with the ability to pick a pass like Kane.
Kane hasn’t scored in his last three matches against Liverpool, but with Jurgen Klopp’s men expected to have much of the ball, his hold-up play and ability to play Spurs’ pacey wingers in-behind Liverpool’s advanced full-backs could be a key weapon for Poch.
The England skipper registered a hat-trick of assists in Bulgaria a couple of weeks ago, and he’s a good price to nab another on Sunday.
