Our golf expert has four picks from the Portugal Masters.
The Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura has been a regular stop now on the tour for over a decade and there is plenty of information to pour over to sift out a few bets. Overall this golf course suits the bombers as wide fairways await tee shots and despite a few tweaks to the layout it is unlikely this template will fail. That being said David Lynn and Richard Green have adopted a slightly different approach to winning here. So there are two ways to skin a cat here but the swash buckling, attacking golfers seem to be the way forward when trying to find a winner.
Matt Wallace is an interesting runner and I certainly could not put anyone off punting him this week. The Englishman has put together a solid run of figures and for the most part is a class above this field if you look back to his last couple of years graft. You'll need to have a hot putter to win here this week and sometimes that's enough to put me off supporting a favourite at single figures who will have a couple with him at the business end even if he manages to reach the likes of 16 under or better. There is no doubt he is capable of staying on this week and be just too good for the rest.
I'll opt instead for a few likely sorts at bigger prices who could make mince meat of this Victoria course. First up an old favourite of mine Ryan Fox who has failed to deliver the goods for me on many occasions. This week the bookmakers are lively to his chances and the 35/1 on offer is just about fair. Two top 20s on the trot in Italy then last week in France is a good sign for the Kiwi who can often go well in bursts of form. He shot 11 under here last year which was a modest effort which included a 64 on day three. Overall he flatters to deceive but he should be relishing this test at Victoria and given his performances the last few weeks I'd be surprised if he doesn't give himself enough opportunities to contend at some point over the week.
2pts each-way R.Fox 35/1 (1/5 7 places)
Plenty of winners here down the years have arrived with some sketchy form so a few missed cuts here and there is of little worry as they head to a track where they find birdies much easier to come by. It may pay to play Guido Migliozzi who has shown on numerous occasions this season just how talented he is. A win in Kenya was backed up by a victory in the Belgian Knockout whilst a top 10 in the Porsche was another solid result of note. He has been seen up until now as being suited by tree lined tracks but as we seen with Colsaerts last week any dog can tame any track on his day. The Italian has missed some cuts of late but coming to Portugal he must be thinking if he can take a few chances on the greens it is a chance to turn his form around. 66/1 about a two time winner this season and clearly hugely talented is a bet I can't turn down.
1.5pts each-way Guido Migliozzi 66/1 (1/5 7 places)
I'll have a punt on Stephen Gallacher this week also. He posted three top ten finishes here on the trot a number of years ago and despite some average form around those years still managed to produce some decent golf around Victoria. This year his hard work has been well documented and he got back into the winners circle earlier in the year in India. 25th and 32nd the last two weeks in Italy and France are good enough signs that the Scot's game is in decent shape.
1pt each-way Stephen Gallacher 100/1 (1/5 7 places)
Nicolai Hojgaard made a dramatic entrance onto our screens a few weeks ago by coming up 1 short at the KLM Open. It was a hugely impressive performance and I expect there is a lot more to come from the Dane. Splitting his time between the Nordic Golf League and the Challenge Tour he managed a few European Tour starts and he grabbed the opportunity in Holland. 1 behind Sergio and 2 ahead of Wallace shows what he is capable of and a weaker field here awaits having made the cut last week in France. Obviously it may well be too soon for this kid to strike but with his attacking game resulting in 17 under par a few weeks ago he could well make gains again on a simple track.
0.75pt each-way Nicolai Hojgaard 175/1 (1/5 7 places)
