The curtain comes down on the 2020 action on the PGA Tour this week with Mayakoba being a welcome dessert. El Camaleon in Playa Del Carmen has always been a favourite of mine with various angles to look at when studying the event. First of all the grass on the greens is most important. Paspalum is a surface not used many times on tour so we look to Puerto Rico and Punta Cana for pointers for who can go well. The course is a tight one and similarities are often drawn between this and Harbour Town. Gay, Kuchar and McDowell have all won the Heritage and this event in Mexico. Mark Wilson won here then went onto win the Sony two years later and three others have since repeated that feat but only months after each other with Wagner, Kuchar and Kizzire all winning both events within the space of a few months. It would be foolish to ignore these pointers when studying the field this week.
Will Zalatoris at 33/1 (6 Places)
Victor Hovland could go well having gone well on this surface before but at the price I slightly prefer Will Zalatoris. A lot is expected of the 24 year old and he hasn't disappointed in his short career on tour so far. He gained special temporary status on the tour courtesy of his top 20 last time out at the Bermuda. Previous to that his first four tour starts included a 5th placed finish at the Shriners, 8th in Punta Cana and 6th at the US Open. He has continued that special form from the Korn Ferry to the main tour and shows no signs of stopping. The Punta Cana result is a sure sign he can go well on this surface and he could be well ahead of the handicapper given what he has shown so far. The books are taking no risk with him and I'd have wanted slightly bigger, but he looks a very lively runner to me this week and a big chance he can get off the mark quickly like many others have done in a similar bracket.
2pts each-way W.Zalatoris 33/1 (1/5 6)
Ollie Schniederjans at 150/1 (6 Places)
Ollie Schniederjans hasn't quite hit the heights expected of him since he joined the tour but a dip back into the Korn Ferry circuit has reignited his game. 2019 was as miserable as it could get with no top tens and 14 missed cuts. A solid run in the last few months on the Korn Ferry has seen him rise nearly 400 spots in the world rankings. Several top tens there were backed up a few weeks ago with a third placed finish on the main tour finishing 2 shots back of the winner Brian Gay at Bermuda. It is worth noting that he finished 3rd at Harbour Town in 2017 and 7th at the Sony a year later. Those courses are heavily linked with El Cameleon and with his game back on track he could possibly go well at triple figures.

Adam Long at 66/1 (8 Places)
One who looks comfortable on Paspalum grass is Adam Long. Long has a super record on the tour the past couple of years with a win at the Desert Classic and runner up finishes in the 3M Open and here at the Mayakoba. We can add another top 5 on Paspalum with his performance in Punta Cana a few weeks back. Top tens at Phoenix and Bayhill as well a top 15 finish at this years US Open tell us that Long may still be a little underrated by the market. He looks an obvious contender at a tasty price.
1.25pts each-way A.Long 66/1 (1/5 8)
Alex Noren at 66/1 (8 Places)
Alex Noren has been quietly impressive over the last few months and may be a runner on a track that has seen European success in the past. Since golf restarted late Summer Noren has finished 3rd at the 3M, 9th in Barracuda, 22nd in the PGA, 8th at the Northern Trust, 17th at the US Open and most recently inside the top 20 in the Zozo and RSM. Accuracy is no doubt needed to some degree around here as wayward shots can be heavily punished by the hazards. Noren has great results on the tightest tracks in Europe winning at Wentworth and a couple of trips to the winners enclosure in Crans. He is sneeking under the radar these weeks and with the announcement of a partnership between the two main tours what better week for him to get off the mark on the PGA tour.
