Our golf expert brings you his preview and predictions for this week's golf, the Dutch Open.
Dutch Open Winner
After the drama at Wentworth we move onto Joost Luiten's homeland and a new course for this years Dutch Open, the Bernardus. Information on the track is thin on the ground but shouldn't pose much of a test for the pros this week. It looks similar to other courses to have held this title with heathland prominent on most holes.
David Law at 66/1
Thomas Pieters has won a handful of low grade European Tour events and after a positive showing at Wentworth is a worthy jolly this week. Grace who is almost alongside him in the betting doesn't quite look the same prospect at the price. Neither would tempt me jump in around the 12/1 mark and we can safely look elsewhere for our bets. Top billing this week goes with David Law. The Scot has risen over 1000 places in the world rankings in the last four months courtesy of a string of solid finishes including 7th at the Porsche European Open, 4th in the Hero then an extremely impressive 14th spot last week at Wentworth where he improved every day shooting 72-69-68-66. He won on a Heathland course winning the Scottish Challenge back in 2018 and showed his credentials for this type of test also when winning the Vic Open, a linksy track in Australia. A weak field presents itself here and any sort of repeat performance akin to Wentworth last week would see him win or go very close.
2pts each-way D.Law 66/1 (1/5 7)
Wil Besseling at 35/1
Wil Besseling has been grinding for a long time without tasting a whole lot of success but looks to be in position to have a fair attempt at his home Open. The dutchman won on the Challenge Tour in 2008 but hasn't managed a win on either tours since. Nevertheless, two 3rd placed finishes last year was the best in a fair while and has shown consistency throughout 2021. Around the green is a long term problem for him and I'm hoping the flat course here should really help that weakness. He is putting extremely well and can mix it with the best off the tee. He will be under enormous pressure if in contention on Sunday but a man of his experience may just be able to cope and he's playing some of his best golf this season.
1.5pts each-way W.Besseling 35/1 (1/5 7)
Joachim B. Hansen at 45/1
I'll take a chance on the Dane JB Hansen this week. He has had an average year since winning the Joburg at the back end of last year but signs were good last week at Wentworth and should he be returning to his best he must be watched. Hansen has a lot of talent in the bank but has struggled all year with the Driver. Last week was his best week of the year off the tee and the putter has been red hot for weeks now. If he can maintain that standard with the Driver this week then he could easily go close again and post his second tour victory.
1.25pts each-way JB Hansen 45/1 (1/5 7)
Alfredo Garcia-Heredia at 80/1
Spaniard Alfredo Garcia-Heredia lies 3rd in the Road To Mallorca standings on the Challenge Tour and has risen to his highest world ranking in his career to date. He has been remarkably consistent on the Challenge tour this year and managed his first win which came down the road from this weeks venue at the Dutch. He ranks higher than some players more than half his price this week and shouldn't be underestimated around the 66/1 mark. The win in the Netherlands only came a few weeks ago and with a top 5 in Germany last week will have great vibes heading back to the area so soon. Kruyskwijk was interesting given his win last time out in South Africa but the layers were on top of his form and the price is of little interest. Detry was dealt the harsh blow of a DQ last week having been 5 under after two days at Wentworth and the 20/1 or bigger on offer here is tempting. He has gone close a few times in the last couple of years and it surely won't be long before he gets over the line.
1pt each-way A. Garcia-Heredia 80/1 (1/5 7)
