Sanderson Farms Championship

Jackson CC has hosted this event for a number of years now and can be a track where you can narrow down your search for a winner more easily than other weeks. A 7400+ yards par 72 awaits the field this week and demands a fair bit of length off the tee. Accuracy doesn't matter as much despite some plodder types doing well here down the years.

The rough isn't an issue but strokes gained approach certainly has been a stat to look towards for those wishing to contend this week. The best ball strikers have dominated around here. Hughes made most of his ground last year on approach play and around the greens having been not so good off the tee, but generally speaking it's the ball strikers that contend.

Runner up Straka was 8th OTT and 10th on approach. In 2021 Burns was 1st OTT and 2nd on approach. Garcia won in 2020 by ranking 1st OTT and 3rd on approach. This is certainly the way forward around Jackson and thereafter it's about holing enough putts to take the leap to the top of the leaderboard.

If Ludvig Aberg arrived here after any other event bar the Ryder Cup I'd be absolutely banging the door down of bookmaker shops to try get on the 11/1 in an event of this quality. Only a few weeks ago he went off slightly bigger than 20/1 in the BMW PGA at Wentworth, when only failing at the final hurdle.

He certainly did not bring his best stuff last week and was somewhat lucky to have Hovland as his partner. Nevertheless he looks a potential future world number one and my only wish is here this was two weeks after the Ryder Cup, although I'd suspect we'd see a much shorter price as a result.

Ben Griffin at 50/1 (Eight Places)

Ben Griffin looks the pick of the bunch this week and heads my selections in Mississippi. Following a promising beginning to his maiden season finishing 12th at Waialae, 21st at PGA National and 14th at Bayhill, things took a turn for the worse and recorded a host of missed cuts from April through to July.

He certainly didn't play as bad as those results suggest and it was no surprise to see things turn for the better towards the end of the season. 25th at the Scottish Open was admirable given it was the first time he had travelled to Europe and he was unlucky the following week in Liverpool missing out making the weekend in the Open by one stroke. 20th at the 3M Open and 24th at the St Jude was a solid end to the season.

Griffin hit the ball a fair way at the start of the season and has toned down his length since for reasons unbeknown to myself. His iron play has been incredibly consistent all year and ranking inside the top 40 on the pga tour in birdie percentage is a feather in the cap heading to Jackson this week. He was inside the top 25 here last year and could improve upon the two rounds of 66 and 68 he shot on debut.

Six weeks off isn't ideal but he had the same period off from November 2022 to January 2023 and started woth 12th in Hawaii and prior to that kicked off 2022 with an 8th place in Bahamas. Clearly one who can go well fresh.

Callum Tarren at 55/1 (Eight Places)

The Ryder Cup victory and celebrations thereafter may give an extra boost to Europeans playing on the pgatour. Aberg is an example of what can be achieved quite quickly and I'm happy to add Callum Tarren to the staking plan this week. Following a missed cut on debut here he showed signs of getting to grips with it last year finishing with rounds of 68-68-69 after an opening 72 to finish in 13th place.

The Englishman hits the ball a mile off the tee and deserves to be considered especially on courses where accuracy with the driver isn't important. Having gained experience going very close at the RSM Classic November, Tarren endured a difficult start to the 2023 campaign with his game off the tee struggling badly and resulting in a string of 9 missed cuts on the spin.

The driver took a turn for the better in Mexico in late April and ever since has performed extremely well bar one or two mishaps. Recently all parts of his game have been in fine working order finishing 13th at the 3M Open and 7th in the Fortinet last time out.

Dreams of a Ryder Cup appearance are wholly unrealistic at this stage, but golfers like Tarren will look to Hatton, Rose, Fleetwood and Fitzpatrick for inspiration and this looks a perfect opportunity to continue some solid recent form.

Peter Kuest at 66/1 (Eight Places)

Peter Kuest may not be a familiar name among golf fans but that could change very soon and he'll see this a big opportunity to continue his whirlwind success on the PGA Tour to date. A Monday qualifier in the Rocket Mortgage in July he took the chance and finished 4th having nabbed the first round lead there in Detroit.

That got him into the following week at the John Deere where he earned special temporary membership by finishing in the top 20 having been 5th heading into the final day. A top 5 and two top 20s in just ten pga tour events is a great start to his career and his long game could be perfect for Jackson.

He is comfortably the longest hitter in the field and for the most part to date his iron play has been more than acceptable. His ball striking was once again tremendous in a missed cut at the Fortinet with the putter being the problem. A better week on the greens could be on the horizon with these pure bermuda surfaces and this rookie could continue to capitalise on these short term opportunities on tour.

Kevin Yu at 80/1 (Eight Places)

Kevin Yu missed a large part of the season due to injury and surgery on his knee and can count himself a shade unlucky he has not been able to pick up momentum because of the Playoffs and Ryder Cup. After over four months off he returned to make the cut at the Travelers and two weeks later followed that with a 6th placed effort at the John Deere.

Since then a trip to Scotland was a bit too much for the inexperienced Taiwanese star then he was shut out at the playoff stage. A below par effort followed in California but improvement can be expected here if he shows up with his irons in the same form as what they were at the Fortinet.

His driver let him down that week but that is uncharacteristic and he can take full advantage of the wide and flat fairways here in Mississippi. He ranks comfortably the best in the field in birdie or better percentage this season and can improve upon the top 20 he posted here on debut last year.
