After a winner last week, Ginger Joe is back with three selections in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
Memorial Tournament
The PGA Tour is back with a signature event this week, with the Memorial Tournament all set to take place at Muirfield Village Golf Club. This is a seriously good golf course which requires consistent tee to green play over four days, and to be honest, the boxes are all ticked for Scottie Scheffler this week. #
He comes back searching for his third straight win in the Memorial, but I do have three players that I believe have the game to serve it up to the reigning champion. Last week on the PGA Tour, I put up two selections, and we had the 14/1 winner Russell Henley, and also JJ Spaun landed in the places too. Hopefully we can continue that form this week.
Ginger Joe's Memorial Tournament Tips
- RUSSELL HENLEY - 1pt each-way at 18/1 (8 places - Ladbrokes & Coral)
- SEPP STRAKA - 1pt each-way at 45/1 (8 places - Ladbrokes & Coral)
- CHRIS GOTTERUP - .75pt each-way at 50/1 (5 - Most firms)
Russell Henley - 18/1 (8 Places)
Russell Henley was a winner for us last week, and while I don’t usually like backing players coming straight off a victory, I’m willing to make an exception here.
This week looks set to reward consistent ball-striking, and Henley is doing some excellent work with his irons at the moment. The course doesn’t necessarily look like a perfect fit for his game on paper, but he’s a classy enough player to perform well even at venues that aren’t ideally suited to his strengths, as he has shown this season.
We’re also getting a slightly bigger price than you might expect following last week’s win, which only adds to the appeal.
In a field where Scottie Scheffler looks the most likely winner by some distance, I think Henley stands out as one of the more realistic challengers to the world number one. He remains in the squad for a second week running.
RUSSELL HENLEY - 1pt each-way at 18/1 (8 places - Ladbrokes & Coral)
Sepp Straka - 45/1 (8 Places)
Last week, Sepp Straka returned to Austria for his home Open on the DP World Tour and put together a very solid performance from start to finish.
He produced four rounds of high quality, consistent golf, carding scores of 67, 66, 68 and 67 to finish tied for 12th place. That’s exactly the type of golf I want to see from Straka heading into this week.
He was extremely reliable off the tee, using his trademark fade to keep the ball in position, while his iron play was equally impressive throughout. Although he posted four rounds under par and holed his fair share of putts, he was also desperately close to converting several more chances. With a little more luck on the greens, he could easily have found himself right in the mix for the title.
Overall, it was a very encouraging week, and the profile I want for the Memorial is someone who is steady, dependable and capable of hitting plenty of greens. Straka brings exactly that kind of form into the event, and at 45/1, I think he represents excellent value.
SEPP STRAKA - 1pt each-way at 45/1 (8 places - Ladbrokes & Coral)
Chris Gotterup - 50/1 (5 Places)
Chris Gotterup isn’t a player that looks an obvious contender this week, but what he does have is a lot of the same traits as Scottie Scheffler, so if his game clicks again this week, he is certainly one that can play himself into the mix here.
Posting low numbers around Muirfield isn’t common, but Chris Gotterup has the ability to shoot low scores at any golf course when his game is in good nick, and I could see him outplaying his odds here.
He is a very volatile player, that does have to be kept in mind, but he has four wins to his name, two this year, and he has climbed to world number 11. Even based on his world ranking he is overpriced.
The 50/1 is plenty of value to take a chance on here, especially with his aggressive nature of play.
CHRIS GOTTERUP - 0.75pt each-way at 50/1 (5 places - Most firms)
