GENTLEMEN (best price 11-1) has now gone 12 races without a win, but by no means has he totally gone at the game because on quite a few occasions he’s run to a very high standard in defeat. Not quite quick enough to cope with an on-song Pretend (ran 33.5 for last 3f) at Kempton four starts ago, Phil McEntee’s ran another fine race in defeat last time at Dundalk when keeping on well from the back of the field to finish fourth behind a resurgent Togoville. The feature of that race at Ireland’s only AW venue was the scorching pace that was maintained throughout and having finished placed in two similarly strongly-run contests on his last visits to today’s track, the son of Ad Valorem rates a decent each-way bet given this race is likely to be run to suit.
16.15 Ayr
CHIDSWELL (NAP) (best price 11-8) may have only beat one rival at Sedgefield last time out but in doing so, he clocked a time to suggest bright things can be expected of him during the back nine of the season. Although beaten on his previous three attempts over fences, Nicky Richards’ charge was up against the likes of Forest Bihan, Cloudy Dream and Pistol Park and without the standard of that sort of opposition in his way this afternoon, it would be disappointing if the Gold Well gelding fails to continue his progression.
16.25 Wolverhampton
MEDICINE HAT (best price 5-1) has been on the receiving end of two absolute shocking rides by Sam James on his last two starts at Newcastle, so the change in jockey and switch back to Wolverhampton should hopefully reap rewards for Marjorie Fife’s inmate. One of the features of many round track races at the Gosforth Park venue has been if you take the running up too early and head to the far rail in the home straight you’re virtually dead in the water to the closers, so to fall into the trap not once but twice, is totally unforgivable. On both occasions, however, he had travelled like the best horse in the race, so providing today’s pilot, Philip Makin, gets the tactics right, the son of Multiplex has every chance of repeating his victory over today’s course earlier in the winter.
