It may feel like summer is in the air at Newmarket this weekend, but there’s a decent chance that WINTER (best price 10-1) could send a chill down the back of the bookmakers over the Rowley Mile. Promising on her first two starts as a juvenile, it wasn’t till her third and final outing that she exhibited the kind of skills that left you believing she could well develop into a filly with Classic potential. In a well-run maiden at Dundalk, the daughter of Galileo pulled nicely clear in the closing stages and with the likes of Dreamy Gal, Magen’s Moon and Making Light (won Group 3 subsequently) all going on to score next time, the value of the form is there for all to see.

Switching from David Wachman to Aidan O’Brien over the winter, she made her seasonal reappearance in the 1000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown and despite getting a little warm beforehand and having to overcome a wide draw, she still managed to turn in a first-class performance first time off the shelf. Forced to race on the wing throughout, the Ballydoyle filly ran on strongly all the way to the line but she also left the impression she would have been well on top with an extra furlong to race, so that augurs well for her chances over the stiff mile at Newmarket.

Very much in the same mould as previous Guineas heroine Legatissimo in terms of physique and form coming into Newmarket, this good-moving and scopey three-year-old has all the hallmarks of a potential Group 1 filly and even though the betting suggests Rhododendron is the number choice from the Ballydoyle operation, it would be no surprise to see her come out on top.
