ELWAZIR (NAP) (best price 11-10) ran a smashing race on racecourse debut in what looked an above-average maiden over today’s C&D 26 days ago and providing there’s no world-beater from the unraced ranks lurking in the wings, this should turn out to be pretty straightforward stuff for the son of Frankel. In a race run at an honest clip from the outset, Own Burrow’s inmate was always to the fore and although he couldn’t quite match the winner’s turn of foot inside the last two furlongs, he impressed by the way he kept on all the way to the line to outrun the more-experienced Coat Of Arms to gain a well-deserved runner-up spot. Based on the last meeting here, the stands side proved the place to be with most of the jockeys, so hopefully that trend continues as this imposing chestnut has the potential luxury of racing up the golden highway next to the rail from box 15.

The feature of the race won by Inscribe at Gowran Park 14 days ago was the strong pace throughout – resulting in the fastest furlong-per-furlong time on the card - and having run extremely well to finish a creditable fourth, the time figure posted by NEWLANDS VOICE (best price 14-1) that afternoon gives him a decent chance of being competitive in this field if he can run anywhere near the same level. Held up out the back with only one behind him at halfway, Denis Cullen’s inmate made up plenty of late headway without threatening the front two, and that performance on the back of another useful effort at Down Royal the time before, suggests the three-year-old is just finding his feet at the right time.

Jamie Spencer got his knickers in a twist on SIMPSON (best price 6-1) last time out at Windsor, but hopefully the ex-champion won’t have any such issues trying to navigate a passage with the wide open expanses of the Rowley Mile ahead of him this time around. Held up going well as the runners headed past the intersection at the Berkshire track, Ed Walker’s inmate just couldn’t get a run for love nor money when he desperately needed the gaps to open and in the end he had to settle for an unlucky third behind the more positively ridden, Motown Mick. A smooth winner at the same track back in September, the son of Dragon Pulse clearly still remains in excellent heart and he rates a decent each-way proposition at the morning prices.
