15.00 Southwell
BEST TAMAYUZ (best price 5-1) was fully entitled to need the run after a 363-day layoff here last week and as that turned out to be the case, there’s plenty of confidence behind him going two places better with that initial run under his belt. Quickly away to assume a prominent position in the early strides eight days ago, Scott Dixon’s gelding swung into the home straight with his nose-banded head still in front and although he couldn’t quite repel the later thrust of both Mach One and Muqaarred, he kept on stoically to finish a creditable third. Likely to be given another aggressive ride, the six-year-old should prove difficult to peg back now dropping in grade over a trip more suitable to his run style.
15.10 Fakenham
DAKKAR COLLONGES (best price 12-1) isn’t a superstar, but he’s run perfectly respectably in two useful novice hurdles and he looks poised to go well again hailing from a stable who produced Oski to land a similar race at Doncaster at the weekend. Shaping really well on his UK debut for connections at Uttoxeter back in October, that form alone behind the likes of Midnight Shadow, Counter Shy and Cause Toujours, would give him a fighting chance of being competitive here this afternoon, and if you add in his latest effort behind two similar types at Fontwell recently, his prospects are further enhanced. On each occasion he’s appeared to get outpaced in the latter stages over the minimum trip, so it seems a wise idea by connections step him up to 2m 4f and that move will hopefully bring about some more improvement.
15.30 Southwell
There has been some doubt as to whether the normal favoured low-numbered runners on the straight track at Southwell have actually been worse off here this season, but with Pearl Acclaim managing to win from the one box last week, supporters of GNAAD (best price 4-1) can take comfort from that recent development. A dual C&D when with Robert Cowell, the son of Invincible Spirit has run perfectly respectably since switching to new connections and following a 67-day break, he caught the eye with his effort to take a creditable sixth in a hot Class 4 5f handicap last month (good race on the speed figures). Upped in trip last time, the three-year-old never really got into the race after missing the kick and finding himself in a poor track position throughout, but hopefully today he can break a little sharper and have a clear run of things with nothing in his way over on the far side.
