POTTERS AWAY (NAP) (best price 11-2) ran perfectly respectably on handicap debut at Uttoxeter last time out and hailing from a stable whose runners have been shaping as though they’ll be better for a run, Henry Oliver’s mare can make her mark in a race of this fairly low level.

Pulled up on her previous outing at Cartmel back in August, the daughter of Getaway was fitted with a tongue-tie for the first time at the Midland venue to see whether that might induce some sort of improvement and although she didn’t manage to trouble the judge 23 days ago, her overall performance had to be taken as a positive one. Moreover, the time figure of the race indicated it might not have a bad heat for the grade and, having now had the benefit of that all-important run under her belt, it’s not unreasonable to expect a big effort from this lightly-raced five-year-old.

The William Hill Dash is a contest far removed from this heat in terms of pure class, so having run so well to finish a creditable third, BROKEN SPEAR (best price 13-2) really ought to go well here now facing a huge nose-dive in quality.

Having run well at York three starts ago from a bad draw, it was disappointing, therefore, to see him run so poorly at Musselburgh on his next outing, but just to prove how difficult it can be sometimes to catch these sprinters right, he bounced back to something like his at today’s Yorkshire venue 10 days ago. Despite being favoured by racing on the far side of the track, he still managed to keep tabs with the eventual winner, Count D’Arsay, until very late and with the fifth home, Terentum Star, already going on to boost the form since, there’s no reason to doubt the level of achievement from Tony Coyle’s gelding. Although he hasn’t raced over today’s trip for quite some time, his prominent style of racing should be well suited to the sharp nature of the track and if he does manage to get somewhere near the pace early, that should allow him to track over towards the nearside rail, which is where the best conditions are usually found at today’s track on heavy ground.

Not that much fibresand solid form on offer here, so it’s no great surprise to see Thahab Ifraj and SHINE BABY SHINE (best price 5-1) dominate the market and as the latter is available to play each-way at his respective morning price, he receives the vote on value grounds.

Although out of the money here last time out, he didn’t run at all badly considering the strength of the opposition and if you isolate his performances in Class 6 level at this track, his form figures read 112. Dropping even further to a mark of 61 despite that useful effort here 33 days ago (will actually run off 54 taking into account his rider’s 7lb claim), Philip Kirby’s charge makes plenty of each-way appeal being one of the few in the field guaranteed to handle the surface and stay the trip.
