For starters, the three-year-old inexplicably missed the break to the tune of five lengths at least and then, having made up the lost ground to lie handy rounding the home turn, he was forced to give away valuable ground by racing wide in the hottest part of the race. The fact that he kept closing on the main players all the way down the straight to the line is testimony to his levels of ability and it’s easy to come to the conclusion he was the best horse in the race. Moreover, the numbers from that heat suggest they were trapping along at a fair old tempo throughout (best circuit time on the round track here all season), so it makes his performance even more praiseworthy given the tale of woe he suffered. Potentially well drawn here this evening providing he can break cleanly, there’s a decent chance he can turn around the form with Just The Man and Good Tidings – who both have to be respected all the same – and at top price 7-1, he’s worth a decent crack each-way.

MOTAMAYIZ (best price 11-2) ran way better than the bare result suggests in a hot novice event at Newbury on debut and with just normal improvement she can take a hand on her all-weather bow.

Being drawn towards the nearside fence in a big field at the Berkshire track is never a good starting point, but that’s the task Roger Varian’s filly faced against a 20-strong line-up 25 days ago. Moreover, the pace was extremely strong from the outset, which extenuated the job at hand for the Oasis Dream filly, so to run as well as she did under the circumstances deserves extra merit. Likely to come on a whole pile for that initial experience, today’s better surface should also suit and it would be disappointing if she wasn’t a major factor here this evening on the evidence of that opening bow.

Bookmakers have chalked up OUT FOR A DUCK (best price 100-1) in anticipation of her finishing last here tonight, but that is unlikely to happen if the expected improvement is forthcoming from what can only be described as a hugely promising debut effort at Southwell.

Sent off 33-1 for her opening gambit at the Midland venue, the daughter of Due Diligence was immediately behind the eight ball after being balked as the gates crashed back and, as a result, she found herself detached in last place heading into the first corner. Forced to race wide at this juncture, Mick Appleby’s filly did, however, managed to make up a tremendous amount of ground around the top bend and into the home straight (ran the fastest sectionals in the hottest part of the race) and despite wanting to hang to her left, she plugged on well to finish a creditable fourth behind the useful debutante, Dark Regard. Looking at the numbers for that race 21 days ago, they point towards several juveniles running at a pace way beyond expectations for a contest of that nature and with the winner going on to advertise the value of the form and figures by bolting up at the same track again last night, anything that ran to a fair level in behind was worth noting. Hopefully, she should know a good deal more after that initial baptism of fire and with a better break here this evening, there’s a decent chance she will be a good deal more competitive from an early stage. Based on the way she ran on debut and her pedigree, she should also appreciate tonight’s extra two furlongs and even though there’s every probability that there may be better days for this filly further down the line, there’s simply no way she deserves to be quoted at 100-1.
