This race in particular has been won by some decent horses over the years, including last year’s winner Glen Shiel, who went onto Group 1 glory shortly afterwards. A field of ten go to post for this year’s renewal and I fancy POWER UNDER ME (best price 7-1) to strike for the in-form combination of Ger Lyons and Colin Keane.
He made a bright start to his career in a soft-ground maiden in October last year, where he travelled powerfully before exhibiting a potent turn of foot inside the final half-furlong to score by over two-lengths - appearing as a useful prospect in the procedure. He returned a beaten favourite next time when only fourth of 19 but conditions were softer than ideal and he firmly got back on track when beaten a head in the Group 3 Goffs Lacken Stakes and might have won without being impeded at the two-furlong pole. He meets the winner of that race, A Case For You, on four-pound better terms so he has every chance of reversing the form. He improved, again, when a close-up third in the Group 2 Minstrel Stakes over seven-furlongs here when last spotted, only beaten a few lengths behind Order Of Australia, who subsequently ran well in the Sussex Stakes. This is easier and, with the return to this trip in his favour with his trainer in top-form, this three-year-old looks sure to run another big race with improvement anticipated.

GO BEARS GO (best price 2-1) beat most of these convincingly when winning the Railway Stakes over this course-and-distance six weeks ago, cementing himself to be one of, if not the highest-rated two-year-old this season and can provide both Rossa Ryan and trainer Dave Loughnane with a breakthrough win at the top level in the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes.
The son of Kodi Bear, trained by David Loughnane, justified his huge price tag when returning an impressive winner at Ascot and lost little in defeat at the Royal meeting when narrowly denied in the final few strides from a low-draw. He then stormed to victory in the Railway Stakes over track and trip, comprehensively beating Castle Star with over a length to spare who had every chance to go past the winner but couldn’t and, from what I could see, the runner-up had a clear passage through the field. Both the pair are drawn one and two so the tactics will be interesting but the English raider is the most uncomplicated horse as he can either drop in behind the pacesetters or make the running and, with plenty of optimism that he will handle the ground, more success on the Irish shores beckons for David Loughnanes’ high-class individual who should arguably be a lot shorter in the betting with most firms and can follow in the footsteps of Advertise, who claimed this prize for the British representatives in 2018.
