Steve Ryder has three selections for Monday's racing.
The Jim Goldie trained Rory (best priced at 11-4) won over this course and distance on his second handicap start and he should hold strong claims again in this race. His victory came on good to firm ground when defeating Khabib by a head and that rival has boosted the form since with a victory on his next start. The third Burscough finished 2nd on his next start and the fourth Royal Jazz has also won again since so it is a race that is working out well.
The handicapper raised Rory 2lb for that victory and he ran well off that mark to finish 3rd at Musselburgh 10 days ago when slightly unlucky. The gelding was slowly away and then carried right when making his effort 2f out so he did well to finish beaten only two lengths at the finish. The three-year-olds is the least exposed in the whole line-up and I expect him to prove hard to beat back over this course and distance if coping with the softer ground.
This looks a competitive 0-60 handicap but with four places available I am willing to take a chance on the Tim Easterby trained Hildenley (best priced at 8-1). The son of Teofilo had shown very little on his first three starts on the flat but stepped forward on his handicap debut to finish 3rd off an opening mark of 59. The form of that race is working out well with the winner Nibras Shadow winning on her next start (now rated 10lb higher), the runner up Boy In The Bar winning on his next start at Yarmouth and even the fifth Come On Linda finishing 3rd beaten only a length on her next start.
Hildenley attempted to make all last time at Newcastle but weakened into 3rd late on so it is interesting that the four-year-old is now fitted with a first time tongue tie. If that works the trick then he looks well handicapped off a mark of 58 and should run well.
Tyson sets the standard in this novice race with a rating of 82 but I expect Fozzie Bear (best priced at 2-1) to improve past him on only his third start. The Roger Charlton trained two-year-old was only beaten a short head on his debut at Lingfield under Trevor Whelan before once again finishing 3rd over the same course and distance in June. The form of that race is working out well with the winner Mr McCann defying a penalty on his next start, the second Silken Petals winning twice since and even the horse who finished last Galileo Glass winning on handicap debut 10 days ago.
Connections now fit Fozzie Bear with first time cheekpieces and it is also worth noting that he lost a shoe last time too. I expect him to have improved following a 53 day break and he should prove hard to beat in this race.
