A race that is armed with significant potential and, although shorter in the betting than my usual kind of selection, the Roger Charlton-trained OUT FROM UNDER (best price 15-8) is the standout choice in this race, with bundles more to come.
He had shaped with appreciable promise when a keeping-on fifth of 13 in a strong-looking novice stakes on debut. Held-up in rear throughout, he made relentless progress once the penny dropped inside the final furlong to be nearest the finish. The form has already begun to take shape as the third and fourth returned next-time-out winners in higher-graded events. Interestingly, connections had him entered in a race here yesterday but decided to wait an extra day for this assignment instead and that can pay dividends with victory at the Welsh venue under Trevor Whelan.
14:40 Thirsk
JUST FRANK (best price 13-2) hasn’t been able to get his head in front this season but his mark has gradually reduced and, in the hope that the combination of a return to six-furlongs with an ease in grade will see a positive outcome, this one-dimensional sort who often likes to go from the front, might be tough to peg back from his good draw in stall four and should be difficult to keep out of the frame getting four places.
He enjoyed a productive campaign as a two-year-old, where he bolted up on soft ground at Newmarket in the 150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes in October before finishing runner-up in a listed event on heavy ground next-time-out. This track clearly plays to his strengths on the evidence of his victory here when winning by three-lengths from the front around this time last year. He’s been highly tried as a three-year-old throughout 2021 so far, running with credit in much stronger races than this, including narrowly denied at Chester as well as finishing third at Doncaster next time, both from marks of 96. The ground was described as good to soft when last spotted but it looked much deeper conditions from a viewing perspective and he only weakened in the closing stages having set a good pace. He demonstrated loads of speed that day so it’s no surprise to see connections persevere with him over this shorter trip and he should launch a bold bid from the front.
17:23 Goodwood
This is likely to be an informative contest for the future with the vote going to WAR HORSE (best price 15-8) who featured heavily for a long way when fifth in a novice at Newmarket won by subsequent July Stakes/Gimcrack winner Lusail, and can open his account here with the step up in trip bound to bring about further improvement.
He was only beaten around six-lengths on debut, where he travelled really well and kept on all the way to the line. The form has been advised by the winner scoring in multiple Group 2 contests since and the second, third and fourth don’t look like your average horses, either. He exhibited so much promise over the seven-furlongs trip and with extra longer sure to suit based on his breeding and that latest form being the strongest on offer, this son of Sea The Stars should go close to winning this novice stakes.
17:45 Curragh
The return to five-furlongs on softish ground at Deauville seemed to backfire when SAM MAXIMUS (best price 4-1) could only muster fourth last time but a repeat of his earlier third in the July Stakes would be good enough form to win this Group 3 event and he’s fancied to prove that display to be no flash in the pan for the combination of PJ McDonald and Tom Dascombe this evening at the Curragh.
He showed a good attitude when winning on debut before a good third to Gimcrack runner-up Gis A Sub at Pontefract before producing a career-best to finish third in the July Stakes at Newmarket. The form could hardly have worked out any better as the winner, Lusail, subsequently won the Gimcrack, the runner-up, Asymmetric, won the Richmond Stakes and the fourth, Ebro River, won the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. He returned a beaten favourite in a Deauville Group 3 when last spotted, but the ground was soft enough and the form has been upheld, too, with the first and third from that race finishing second and sixth in the Group 1 Prix Morny. This UK representative is the highest-rated runner in the field at 107 and should be able to showcase his maximum qualities at this venue with conditions and trip to suit, especially with the form of Sacred Bridge’s win last time not working out all that great, with the same applied to Ladies Church who will need a lot more improvement to trouble Tom Dascombe’s charge who is rated five-pound higher.
14:40 Thirsk
I also like the claims of the very capable SUMMER SANDS (best price 10-1), who is certainly well-handicapped to win a race of this nature in this grade and, at the current prices, he looks great each-way value getting four places.
He looked a high-class Juvenile in 2019 for Richard Fahey, where he finished sixth in the Windsor Castle, fifth in the Gimcrack and third in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes. He then dominated Redcar’s Redcar Two Year Old Trophy before joining Joseph O’Brien in Ireland. He wasn’t able to replicate his UK form across those shores but the ground wasn’t ideal in each of his last four outings and the return to his former trainer, alongside better conditions, could be the contributing factor to him getting back on track here. On the face of it, he was clearly best of these as a juvenile on all known evidence and, in the expectation he can continue where he left off with Richard Fahey, this son of Coach House looks a serious each-way player in this grade.
