The Ruth Carr-trained MAGICAL EFFECT (best price 14-1) blew his chance with a slow start when last spotted but, under the circumstances, caught the eye to be nearest the finish in fifth and provided he gets away on level terms without being hampered on this occasion and with plenty of optimism that he will get this longer trip, this well-handicapped nine-year-old could be a big player in what looks a fairly ordinary race for the grade at the North Yorkshire venue.

He’s six-pound below his last winning mark and despite it being four years since he last ran at this track on good ground, he finished a creditable third in the Consolation Race For The William Hill Great St Wilfred Stakes here and, in any case, has performed with credit in each of his outings at this course since, so the track will be no issue. He goes particularly well for Jamie Gormley and given the fact it’s far from an insurmountable standard set by those towards the head of the betting, Ruth Carr’s charge is thrown in on old form and worth a chance to capitalise on his much-reduced mark being only one of a few arriving here in respectable form at present.

AYE AYE CHARLIE (best price 13-2) hasn’t been at this best this year and remains on a long losing run but he did, however, offer some encouragement from the front at Stratford last time and now competing from a career-low mark with Jack Tudor taking off a valuable three-pounds, the Christian Williams-trained nine-year-old might be worth tempting at a nice price in the Newton Abbot Racecourse On Facebook Handicap Hurdle.

Although not the force of old, this Gelding by Midnight Legend has a touch of class, as demonstrated when running above expectations to be there or thereabouts in both the 2018 Grade 1 Ballymore’ Novices’ Hurdle (seventh) and Grade 1 2019 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle (eighth). He’s come a long way down in the weights since then and hasn’t been anywhere near that form this term, but there’s no question about it, this horse is so much better than an initial rating of 105, while Jack Tudor reduces his mark even further, claiming another three-pounds. He has finished behind both Bailarico and Tel’art the last two times, but he’s ten-pounds better off with the latter and fourteen-pounds better off with the former on today’s terms so that should easily enable him to bridge the gap. That weight concession from the pair just mentioned could prove pivotal in the context of this contest and that could be enough for him to prevail for the first time in nearly three years.
