The market appears to have this 1m4f novice stakes as a two horse race but I feel it worth backing the Brian Barr trained INDEPENDENCE (best priced at 12-1) to cause an upset. The gelding gained valuable experience in bumpers earlier this year and was successful at Fontwell when victorious by three lengths over 1m5f.
Independence ran with credit over this course and distance when 5th in August on his first attempt on the flat when the reopposing Basic Beauty finished ahead of him in 3rd. The five-year-old was slowly away that day on his first attempt on the flat so he should be more used to starting in stalls this time and I expect Thomas Greatrex to make more use of him in this race. Independence finished 2nd at Newton Abbott over hurdles last time and he should be able to challenge the top two in the market in this race.

The Jane Chapple-Hyam trained CLEGANE (best priced at 7-2) has a good record over this course and distance with form figures of 121 and she is expected to prove hard to beat back at this venue once again. She joined her new stable earlier this season from the Stuart Williams yard and got off the mark for new connections last time over this course and distance by a neck off a mark of 60.
The handicapper has raised the daughter of Iffraaj only 2lb up to a mark of 62 for this race which seems generous as the runner-up that day Smooth Spirit had previously shown good form over the course and distance too. The favourite Epsom Faithfull is 4lb “well in” at the weights but I am not convinced she wants this step up in trip to 7f and preference instead goes to Clegane from Stall 2.

The Joseph O’Brien trained REKERO (best priced at 5-2) is a lot less experienced than his main market rivals Safari Quest and Chicago Black Hawk but I feel he should be able to progress past them on only his second start. The son of Fastnet Rock cost 725,000gns as a yearling and made an encouraging debut at Cork to finish 4th when only beaten two lengths at the finish.
Rekero raced lazily throughout the middle part of that 1m2f contest so the application of first time blinkers is a positive in this race. Safari Quest (80) and Chicago Black Hawk (79) don’t set a huge standard on official ratings and the RPR of 83 achieved by Rekero on his debut is actually higher than either of his rivals have achieved in their 12 races combined. Therefore, I expect Rekero to have progressed from his debut run and prove hard to beat in this contest.
