DOLDRUM BAY (best price 15-2) doesn’t have many miles on the clock for a ten-year-old and having ran very well in all three outings at this venue since returning from an absence for current connections thus far, including when switched back to hurdles last time, he merits strong consideration from a mark that is seemingly exploitable in a modest race of this nature.
He ran quite well when trained in Ireland without threatening to get involved but, interestingly, switched to this stable following a four-year absence when making his stable debut over this distance over the smaller obstacles in July. He exceeded market expectations when finishing strongly to finish fifth of 14 and did little wrong when passing a few tiring rivals when second over course-and-distance on chase debut in July. He was then third back over hurdles since, which seemed like a prep-run for today’s assignment and, with Craig Nichol back in the plate and loads of scope from a handicapping point of view, he looks set to go close to opening his account at the Scottish venue.

Do No Wrong made a winning handicap debut at Sedgefield last month and is the one to beat but COSHESTON (best price 8-1) has become dangerously well-handicapped and, having showed signs that his turn might be near with three placed efforts from his last four, Jennie Candlish’ eight-year-old looks the each-way value with four places widely available.
His first couple of performances in the handicapping scenario saw him run very well from marks of 97 and 95 and, despite being limited to just six outings since, he’s lightly-raced for his age so is open to further improvement. The application of a visor has unquestionably signalled a positive difference of late, including when staying on powerfully in the closing stages a fortnight ago at Bangor and probably would have won the time before that, too, as he challenged two out but hung left which wouldn’t have helped. He’s on the same mark as last time and could pose a serious threat to the favourite in receipt of twelve-pounds.

The Practical Car And Van Rental Perth Handicap Hurdle looks an interesting race with preference for the least exposed NO FIXED CHARGES (best price 3-1) who has the scope to surpass his current mark and can strike for the Neil Mulholland and Tom Scudamore combination at the Scotland venue.
He wasn’t suited to an injection in pace at a crucial part of the event when a very respectable third on handicap debut at Stratford in a steadily-run affair but has consumed a good profile in this scenario from four outings with key pieces of form working out strongly and, with potential for better, he’s taken to improve past some exposed rivals and get the better of the hat-trick seeking Henry Sellers.

RAYMOND (best price 7-1) could only muster second at Carlisle last time when inconvenienced by the drop in trip but returning to the scene of his excellent display when fourth in the Northumberland Vase Handicap over course-and-distance from a pound higher mark, this ultra-tough staying six-year-old could prove hard to beat.
He’s been in good form this year, winning three of his ten starts, and his form figures at this venue now read 124 in total. His form over two-miles now reads a win at York in the Autohorn Handicap and a fourth place in the Northumberland Vase here. This track clearly plays to his strengths as he likes it here and he certainly remains realistically treated off a mark of 87, so is a solid each-way choice with the possibility of coming out on top.
17:55 Newcastle
DON'T JOKE (best price 28-1) was ultimately well beaten on his last visit to this venue but has looked a different proposition since the turn of the year, including when posting an impressive display on his only start over this trip at Nottingham on his penultimate outing and offers some value as an each-way contender.
His profile, in general, has often expressed a mixed bag of results but he’s done little wrong of late and would have finished a lot closer last time, possibly second without being squeezed for room inside the final furlong in which he finished fifth on the bridle. He confirmed his stamina for this distance on his penultimate outing, doing all of his best work at the business end when scoring with plenty up his sleeve at Nottingham. Johnny Boom is feared most who keeps defying the assessor but Ruth Carr’s charge is only three-pound above his last winning mark and might just be able to throw his hat into the ring being his trainers only runner on the card, especially if ridden to come with his customary late surge which is his potent attribute getting four places from an each-way angle.
