JESSICA RABBIT (best price 9-1) is a really consistent sort who unseated her rider through no fault of her own just eight days ago but even a replica of her close-up second here in August from this mark should see her heavily involved in the outcome of this contest.

Graeme McPherson’s mare has produced a solid sequence of placed efforts this year since scoring at Doncaster last year, in which she’s culminated form figures of 2333223U and her latest rare mishap can be excused as she was badly hampered and left no option but for her rider to go out the side door. That said, she wouldn’t have had a hard race so she’ll be fresher than most and she’s already gone close off this mark twice this term, including here in August when only finding a subsequent winner too strong in the latter stages. This is probably a tougher race, but she doesn’t know how to run a bad race and remains fair value to run well again with three places on offer.

This should be a cracker and I am going to take a chance on the Roger Teal-trained KENZAI WARRIOR (best price 18-1), who was deemed good enough to contest last year’s 2000 Guineas in which he finished a creditable ninth. While something clearly looked amiss on his return last time, which reflects that in his price odds, he’ll evidently find this easier having been highly tried during his career and this four-year-old shouldn’t be overlooked in this grade, especially if able to rediscover his promising two-year-old form.

He was a winner of both his starts as a two-year-old and was far from discredited when ninth of 15 in the 2000 Guineas. He failed to match the form in three subsequent starts but shaped well for a long way on reappearance at Newbury in May until being pulled up two furlongs from the finish. That run ought to have blown away any cobwebs and, in the hope all-weather specialist Jack Mitchell can work his magic on this talented participant, his mount might just be able to exceed market expectations at a monster price.

The Richard Hughes-trained BUGLE MAJOR (best price 11-2) has continued to knock on the door this year and ran his best race to date when pushing Fancy Man to half-a-length earlier this month and, with no horse of that calibre in today’s line-up, he’s fancied to go close and enhance his fine strike-rate on the all-weather.

He was very unlucky in the Royal Hunt Cup earlier in the year but is seemingly getting better and better, and ran a good race on his penultimate outing to finish second to the 98-rated Recovery Run. He then made the 109-rated Fancy Man pull out all the stops this month when beaten only half-a-length and his performance can be upgraded due to the fact that he was conceding over seven-pounds to the winner. He’ll find this easier and he boasts a good, solid record on the all-weather which reads 232, albeit in France. His mark remains unchanged and surely he’s better than 92, especially when you take into consideration the two rivals he’s chased home the last two times. He has exhibited so much promise up to now that he makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race that looks just average for the grade.
