PERRY OWENS (best price 11-2) stayed on in particularly pleasing fashion to capture third place in the valuable Lartigue Hurdle at the Listowel festival and with today’s race looking a decidedly weaker version on paper, Noel Meade’s gelding is strongly fancied to maintain his decent record at today’s track.

A winner of a juvenile hurdle on his first visit to Ballybrit this time last year, the son of Free Eagle failed to build on that solid foundation and it wasn’t until he returned here back in July that he showed anything like his best form. In an ultra-competitive 2m5f handicap at the festival, the four-year-old kept on well in the closing stages to finish fifth of the 20-strong field and considering that was his first outing for 150 days, his performance probably deserved extra praise. Once again pitched into a red-hot affair at the Kerry venue last time, he came home strongest of all of those held up in the rear and with plenty of quality performers from his generation strung out like washing in behind him that day, it’s easy to estimate he turned in a career-high display. Back to arguably his favourite venue off a similar mark and ground he likes, Perry Owens rates a very tempting each-way proposition at the morning odds with most firms offering four places.

Soft ground is a little bit on an unknown quantity as far as ARQOOB (best price 4-1) is concerned, but there’s little denying that William Jarvis brings some of the best recent form into the party, so for that reason, he’s worth chancing that he does adapt to the prevailing conditions.

A comfortable winner of a mile handicap at Yarmouth earlier in the campaign, William Jarvis’ gelding has gone from strength-to-strength since and even though he’s only managed to be successful once more, he’s gathered up a body of work to suggest his rate of progress hasn’t stopped yet. Strong in the finish of a well-run mile handicap over today’s course two starts ago, the son of Estidhkaar was a smidgen unlucky not to follow up in a better race at Sandown a month later, but at least he left plenty of positive undertones for the future attached to the display. Based on the evidence of his win here and the late ground he made up at the Esher venue 25 days ago, the three-year-old looks to be crying out for further than a mile and with today’s contest like to provide him with the test he’s been searching for, he ought to go very close if he handles the easier ground.

QUILTED (NAP) (best price 5-2) left behind a slightly underwhelming effort on her seasonal reappearance with an altogether more convincing display at Thirsk last time out and with the form of the race already beginning to look a good deal more solid than it did on the day, Roger Charlton’s filly rates a strong choice to take advantage of what appears a fair mark on handicap debut.

Despite making modest late gains at Goodwood behind Bartzella on her first outing for 335 days, she was never really at the races, but with that all-important run under belt and upped in trip, the daughter of Frankel finally realised some of her promise at the Yorkshire veneu. In what turned out to be a well-run contest courtesy of Titanium Moon going hard from the front, the three-year-old filly settled nicely to race on the heels of the leaders turning for home and from that point onwards, she really turned on the turbo boosters to quicken past and away from her rivals late on. Scoring in a fast time, she also took the scalp of her Goodwood conqueror and subsequent Ascot winner, Bartzella, and with a pedigree to suggest she will have little trouble adapting to today’s surface, Quilted has all the qualities to make a mockery of her opening rating of 80.
