The Dr Richard Newland-trained MAKKA PAKKA (best price 4-1) was quite consistent when trained in Ireland and has made a good start to his career in this sphere in which he came really close to scoring over today’s course-and-distance when caught in the shadows of the post. He’ll find this assignment a lot easier given the winner from his latest display is rated 120 and he’ll be tackling opponents rated no higher than 117 here. His stable are among the winners of late, while his trainer boasts an excellent 26% strike-rate here over the last five years. The assessor has only put him up a couple of pounds and, with a repeat showing, this son of Duke Of Marmalade may go one better.

There’s no disguising the bright start the Skelton’s have made to the season and one of their smart horses CADZAND (best price 2-1), will make his eagerly-awaited chasing/handicap debut in the Charlie Longsdon Racing Handicap Chase and is expected to take some beating.

He had taken well to hurdles last term, winning twice as well as finishing second twice with his only below-par effort coming in the Betfair Hurdle when only managing midfield in which he was sent off 11/2 favourite. He bounced back next time in which he defied a double penalty back in novice company at Southwell in March, showing a good turn of foot and is an exciting chase prospect for the season ahead so is taken to get the better of former Grade 1 winner Reserve Tank who looks the chief threat having returned to form following a string of low-key efforts when runner-up in May. Knight Of Dubai is interesting but Cadzand appears to be the stable first-string and should go close if his jumping passes the test.

An interesting maiden hurdle with a preference for BILL BAXTER (best price 13-8) who made an impressive winning debut at Fakenham by thirteen-lengths on soft ground before finishing a creditable fourth in a listed event at Newbury and looks the type who could make a lovely novice hurdler this term for Warren Greatrex.

He’s clearly well regarded by connections and travelled powerfully when fourth last time and, although he was unable to muster any sort of challenge, he stuck to his guns when the pace quickened to be gaining lengths in the final 150 yards or so and that form is by far the strongest on display. That turned out to be one of the best bumpers of the season as the race was littered with subsequent winners in behind, with the likes of I Like To Move It, Gelino Bello and Might I, who have all scored over hurdles impressively in the last seven days. The combination of a set of hurdles and the step up in trip should unlock further progression and this five-year-old by Milan is fancied to enhance that form with victory on hurdles debut.

The Download The Star Sports App Handicap Hurdle is an appealing race, from a betting point of view, in which COLORADO DOC (best price 10-1) gets the vote to complete the hat-trick for Connor and David Brace.

The lightly-raced ten-year-old has the winning mentality having scored in six of his ten outings between the flags and having won a higher-grade chase event back in April, he followed up back over hurdles when seeing off Grace A Vous Enki at Worcester three weeks ago. An opening handicap debut mark of 129 looks well within range on the balance of his form and being the only runner in the field on top of his game at the moment, David Brace’s charge should make a bold bid to complete the three-timer.
