12.08 Plumpton

Grandeur D’ame got back to winning ways when last spotted on debut for Alan King and is likely to prove popular, as will Aucunrisque, but they might find it tough conceding weight to CODE NAME LISE (best price 9-2) who can advance her smart bumper form on debut in this sphere under Bryony Frost. Her connections have been in search of a soft surface to get her hurdles career started and they have found this mare a good opportunity here. She was an above-average type last term, in which she built on her Ascot success to finish third in listed company in November and it will be surprising if she doesn’t develop into a more than useful hurdler this season.

14:20 Plumpton

The Sky Sports Racing Sussex National Handicap Chase (14.20pm) is the main dish from Plumpton, where trainer David Pipe has a quartet of runners in the marathon and I like the look of two of those in the shape of VIA DOLOROSA (best price 18-1) and D’JANGO (best price 13-2) with five places widely on offer.

The former, Via Dolorosa, ran really well in the Sefton on stable debut at Aintree before unseating in the Becher through no fault of his own when badly hampered mid-race when still travelling strongly. He goes up significantly in distance here, which remains an unknown, but he looks on a competitive mark, will handle conditions and Martin McIntyre can take off a valuable seven-pounds. Taking into account that he’s comparatively less-exposed than most, he makes each-way appeal with more to offer.

It’s interesting that stable jockey to David Pipe - Tom Scudamore, has opted for D’jango, who’s got no weight, will like the ground and the step up in trip should suit. He didn’t jump with much fluency on stable/UK debut but looks to have been trained for this race so will be much fitter here, while some of his French form looks really strong in the context of this affair. He’s another with stamina to prove but an essential five-pound drop since his run at Wincanton is a positive and he could go very well here.
