MONDAMMEJ (best price 11-4) has made steady progression in the last year to find himself on a perch of 102 and although he got beaten off that career-high mark at Newcastle last time out, he still looks capable of being thoroughly competitive in races of today’s nature.

A three-time winner on the Turf last season, Mel Brittain’s gelding also ran well in some top-class handicaps in defeat, but he’s also very useful on an all-weather surface as he’s proved on his last three starts. Back-to-back victories at Wolverhampton was followed by an equally useful effort in defeat at the Gosforth Park venue last time and with the speed figures all extremely healthy from each contest, his overall body of work far supersedes anything else in today’s heat. Likely to be dropped in behind the front-running Irish raider No Speed Limit over towards the far side, expect the son of Lope De Vega’s usual kick finish to come into effect late on.

RESET BUTTON (NAP) (best price 13-8) has cut a bit of a frustrating character of late, finishing runner-up on his last three starts, but with the speed figure for at least two of them strongly suggesting he’s pretty much run as well as could be expected, Ian Williams’ gelding is fancied to have a change of luck if running to a similar level.

A decent winner at Wolverhampton back in December when allowed to come through strongly off a fast pace, the son of Yorgunnabelucky then had to row his own boat on his next two starts and, as a result, he was rather a sitting duck ready to be picked off by the closers at the business end. Reverting back to being ridden off the pace over today’s C&D last time out, unfortunately the gallop was as such that they just sprinted down the home straight which, once again, wouldn’t have played into his strengths. To run as well as he did considering those circumstances strongly suggests he remains in good form and with the likes of Livia and Fred Bear in today’s party, there should be a decent enough tempo to the contest in order for him to run to maximum capacity.

CALONNE (best price 9-2) is by no means a frequent winner, but he’s often exhibited more ability than his rating has suggested and with one of those such displays coming when last seen at Kempton, Robyn Brisland’s grey could easily prove to be a factor if fit enough to do himself justice following a 142-day break.

A strong finisher when runner-up when last seen over tonight’s course back in August, it was odd to say the least why connections decided to drop him back to six furlongs on his next outing at Kempton. Unsurprisingly outpaced and towards the rear early, the six-year-old finished off his race with plenty of purpose and had he obtained anything like a clearer run down the straight, he may have bettered his final position by quite some margin. Not seen out since, there’s always a concern backing a horse of this nature on their return after such an absence, but he does hail from an in-form stable so let’s hope that he’s somewhere near the levels required to make an impact here this evening (first time in Class 6 company for some while).
