BROUGHTONS RHYTHM (best price 12-1) surprisingly remains winless over fences, but he’s been runner-up in seven of those in better events than this and is down to a career-low mark here, making him of some interest, from an each-way point of view. It was only back in December that he chased home the 124-rated Galileo Silver off a mark of 95 over today’s course-and-distance and that was in a higher-graded contest too. He might be the veteran of the field but this is only the second time in his career he’ll have competed at this level and with the combination of conditions, course form and ease in the weights in his favour, he could surprise a few at a big price.

EVENTFUL (best price 4-1) was a place behind Bella Beau on her penultimate outing but was given quite a lot to do that day and she duly obliged on her return visit to the venue last time despite being short of room on the home turn and can follow-up here. She comfortably beat Rubys Reward by over two-lengths and would have won by further with a clear passage too, so a five-pound rise seems manageable and another bold bid looks on the cards from Suzi Best’s mare.

I also like another runner in this, in the shape of NO NO TONIC (best price 7-2), who came close to winning this twelve months ago when beaten a short-head and has shaped promisingly since to suggest her turn might be near. Her second in this last year was the second time she’s gone close at the track and while she’s a little higher in the weights this time round, she’ll find this a lot easier than when an excellent third in a listed event when last spotted at Exeter. If she can reproduce that sort of effort in today’s company, she must be thereabouts at the very least under Fergus Gillard, who can offset a valuable three-pounds to further strengthen her claims.
