BUCEPHALUS (best price 7-2) was unable to live with a Nicky Henderson inmate on hurdles debut at Newbury but despite doing plenty in terms of pulling hard and being a little awkward at some of his hurdles, he shaped with a lot of promise to finish a clear third. It looked for a brief moment that he was going to win too as he was travelling strongly on the heels of the eventual first and second until his fitness told in the latter stages. He’s sure to improve both physically and mentally with that appearance under his belt and, if able to find greater fluency in the jumping department, he should be ready to produce an even bigger performance in this slightly easier contest.

This is clearly wide-open but ASTROMAN (best price 11-2) hasn’t done a lot wrong in placing in his last four starts in this sphere, including twice at this venue and is taken to go one better this agtHe ran a good race to finish second carrying a monster weight over todays course-and-distance two weeks ago and has essentially been left on the exact same mark here. Jack Quinlan’s mount looks a really solid each-way bet with the possibility of taking the spoils.

A chance is taken on DALYOTIN (best price 2-1), who was useful in France and reverts to chasing on just his second start in the UK with his trainer in flying form. He could only finish fourth on debut for connections over hurdles when last spotted but it appears that his trainer was using that as a prep-run for today’s event and being on a very fair mark of 117, Nathan Moscrop’s mount, who’s open to improvement, should take a bit of beating.

MAX FLAMINGO (best price 5-1) uncharacteristically unseated his rider when well fancied for a stronger event than this at this course last month but boasts some really strong form in this sphere and gets the vote to make his class tell in the latter stages. He’s got a much bigger weight to carry on this occasion but he’s been mixing it with some of the hottest prospects in a variety of events this term, including the likes of Run Wild Fred, Fury Road and Ashdale Bob. Dennis O’Regan is back in the plate and Francis Casey’s useful operator looks the way to go in the TRI Equestrian Handicap Chase off a mark of 142, which is lenient on the balance of his overall form.
