Grand National 2022

Any Second Now

Using data starting from when the ante-post market for the Grand National 2022 opened last year, Any Second Now - third in last year's race - has taken 6.96% of the bets through oddschecker.

He edged out another of the favourites Escaria Ten in his prep run at Fairyhouse last month, which saw him shorten considerably from a best price 16/1. The JP McManus-owned 10-year-old is still available at a best price 9/1 but is as short as 7/1 in some places.

POSITION NAME % BETS
1 Any Second Now 6.96
2 Snow Leopardess 6.31
3 Delta Work 5.55
4 Fiddlerontheroof 4.70
5 Escaria Ten 4.21

Snow Leopardess

Snow Leopardess has been backed in 6.31% of the betslips through oddschecker as she bids to become the first grey winner of the Grand National since Neptune Collonges in 2012.

Trained by Charlie Longsdon, Snow Leopardess is an extra special case in that she had a foal during a two-year absence from the track between September 2017 and November 2019. The 10-year-old mare held off Hill Sixteen to land the Unibet Becher Chase in a photo finish at Aintree in December.

Andy Holding said: "Three straight victories for Snow Leopardess allied to her colour will ensure Charlie Longsdon’s grey is bound to be a popular choice, but it’s not just pure sentiment that may see her close to going off favourite."

Delta Work

Next on our most backed list is Delta Work (10/1), who will be out to emulate stablemate Tiger Roll having dethroned the two-time Grand National winner and five-time Festival winner in the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham last month.

Delta Work, a five-time Grade 1 winner himself, has pulled in 5.55% of the ante-post bets for the world's most famous steeplechase at Aintree.

Architect Tips said: "He’s a massive player if he is able to continue his new lease of life at Aintree as he bids to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Tiger Roll, who has certainly passed the baton onto him for Gigginstown stud.”

Fiddlerontheroof

The fourth most backed horse is also the first name on Andy Holding's Grand National 2022 shortlist, Fiddlerontheroof, backed in 4.70% of the ante-post betslips through oddschecker.

"A main contender from the home contingent is the consistent Fiddlerontheroof, who looks to have many of the credentials befitting previous winners," he explained.

"Placed at Grades 1 and 2 level as a novice, his second season has seen him run tremendous races in two of the most competitive handicaps either side of the new year and if you look at how he was staying on in the latter stages of the first of those events at Newbury over 3m2f, you’d say he was crying out for further."

Escaria Ten

The fifth and final horse on our most backed ante-post list is Escaria Ten (4.21%), another of the Gordon Elliott entries with Delta Work. He looked to have his recent encounter with Any Second Now safely tucked way until his pocket was picked late on which suggests that his connections have got his preparations for the Grand National just about right.

In fact, his price has actually shortened since that day at Fairyhouse (16/1 into a best price 11/1), probably because he did enough to beat the favourite on that day, Willie Mullins’ Burrows Saint.
