CRESSWELL QUEEN (best price 9/4) didn’t offer much over hurdles until turning up over course-and-distance back in March, where she bolted up with the minimum of fuss by five-lengths off a mark of 76. She couldn’t follow up over the same track and trip off a seven-pound higher mark two weeks later but I was taken with the way she travelled extremely well throughout, likewise to her previous victory here. Despite racing keenly in rear, she cruised into contention on the second circuit, passing rival after rival and, although she was beaten eight lengths into second, her performance left the impression she might still be ahead of the assessor. Off the exact same mark and, in the hope that Harry Reed doesn’t have to commit her so soon on this occasion, the seven-year-old looks good value to potentially make amends in such a winnable contest.

A difficult-looking race on paper at first glance but perhaps GUIDEDBYTHESCIENCE (best price 11/2) will make an impact on just her third start in the handicapping sphere. Her fourth on hurdles debut over today’s course-and-distance was quite promising and the race itself has worked out nicely, as the second and fourth have won since, while the winner subsequently ran well in a listed event at Cheltenham. She couldn’t much cut much ice in three subsequent outings but looked the winner for much of the contest over a slightly longer trip here last time until weakening in the closing stages. The drop back in trip off a reduced mark should help and she should make her presence felt.

Mick Appleby and Ali Rawlinson team up with their only runner and ride on the card in the shape of SAATTY (best price 16/1), who could go well at double-figure odds. This four-year-old shaped promisingly on a few starts when trained in Ireland before making an impressive stable/UK debut at Chelmsford, winning by seven-lengths. He’s had four starts since and while he’s only ran once on the turf for his current trainer, it resulted with an excellent third in a class-four handicap at Epsom off today’s mark of 70.

He then won off this mark on the all-weather at Kempton and considering he disappointed on his final start last season, he shaped better than the finishing position indicated on his return at Chelmsford last time when making a bold effort from the front. It seemed like connections were using that a preparatory run ahead of his return to the turf here and, having already established himself to be a horse who can defy this mark with winning form over this trip too, I rate his chance just as good as any in this field despite being the outsider.
