LOOM LARGE (best price 5/1) has shaped a good bit better than his finishing position has suggested on both his two starts so far this term and, with an opening handicap mark that has plenty of scope for exploitation, Andrew Oliver’s gelding is now at a level where he should be able to express himself more freely.

Seventh behind one this year’s Derby contenders in the shape of Star Of India on his only start as a juvenile, the son of Acclamation didn’t run too badly on his opening salvo at the Curragh on his first outing for 169 days.

Considering that effort was over 1m2f at the Co Kildare venue, a rat was very much smelt when connections dropped him back a full three furlongs for his latest encounter at Limerick and given the way he was ridden at the Greenmount Park venue, the gut feeling that he may turn out to be a handicap project was justified.

Not knocked about to finish a never-nearer eighth 18 days ago, the lightly-raced three-year-old is now racing over a trip that is likely to see him in a better light and in a race where there doesn’t appear to be too many standouts, he’s worth a small interest to make more of an impact than in all his three previous starts.
