MADAME AMBASSADOR (NAP) (best price 9/4) has only scored once in 10 starts, but at the same time she hasn’t run a badly in any of those races and arriving here off arguably one of her most notable efforts in her short career, Charlie & Mark Johnston’s filly can gain due rewards for her consistency.

No more than mildly promising on her first two starts to the campaign, cheekpieces were sporting in a bid to sharpen up the daughter of Churchill and on the evidence of both her two efforts since the application, the headgear seems to have had a galvanising effect. Runner-up to subsequent King George VI Handicap fourth, Savvy Knight, over today’s course at the beginning of the month, she went on to run an equalling good race at Goodwood last time out and with the time figure from both events indicating she’d run to an extremely high standard in defeat, the fact the handicapper has eased her in the rating makes no sense. However, it means she now drops down a level to class 4 company and with today’s slight step up in trip seen as a positive, the three-year-old chestnut is fancied to find the winning groove.

THE ALGARVE (best price 18/1) showed a propensity towards soft ground based on her two best performances as a two-year-old and, having not encountered such a surface in three outings so far this term, there’s every chance she will leave behind her recent form figures.

The fact that tonight’s venue is holding a precautionary inspection this morning suggests the ground could turn a little worse than projected, but having already won on her only encounter on heavy ground, Aidan O’Brien’s filly will be one of a few least inconvenienced by the conditions. Aimed at this season’s Epsom Oaks, the daughter of American Pharaoh found herself outclassed by what was probably an above-average field, but dropped significantly in grade at Naas last time, she showed a good deal of encouragement.

Held up towards the rear at the Co Kildare venue, she was still detached in last place as the field turned for home, but in producing a decent finishing effort over towards the far side rail, she ticked off quite few flagging rivals in the home straight. Not knocked about to do so, she left the impression she would do better with an even sterner test, so with tonight’s examination likely to provide her with the platform she requires, the three-year-old filly can run beyond her market expectations.

Others to consider now the ground is soft are Yaxeni, who landed last season’s November Handicap under testing conditions and Pineapple Express, who is not just the only course winner in today’s field, but shaped as though she running herself back to form at Cork last time out.

Not a bad concluding bumper with Shady Daisy catching the eye first time out and newcomer Illusion Of Time well-fancied judged on the overnight markets, but the solid one of the top three in the betting is previous scorer ILANZ (best price 2/1), who’s fancied to put his all-important experience to good use.

It’s probably a little bit of a bold statement to suggest Milton Harris is the UK’s version of Willie Mullins in the bumper division, but there’s no denying the Warminster handler has proved himself a dab hand in this sphere last season and his astute eye for young talent brought his attention to this son of Rail Link from his ex-Irish base. Having his first outing from his new surroundings at Market Rasen 11 days ago, the four-year-old was well-backed to make a winning start for his current connections and having travelled well throughout, he readily justified favouritism.

Although not spectacular on the overall speed figures by any means, he did, however, impress with the way he quickened to pull well clear in the closing stages and with his trainer clearly keen to strike while the iron is hot – or more predominantly whilst the ground remains quick – he rates a fair bet at the morning odds to provide his useful young pilot his second winner within a week.
