GERT LUSH (best price 7/2) looks the way to go in this contest. She ran her best race of the campaign when third off this mark at Newbury last time and that form has been positively advertised by the runner-up Pledge Of Honour, who has completed a double since off marks in the 70’s. Roger Teal’s five-year-old will take a drop in grade here and ran well to finish second over course-and-distance off a six-pounds higher mark last year. She has an excellent chance to regain the winning thread off a mark that’s now five-pounds lower than when last successful.

GOLDEN RAINBOW (NAP) (best price 5/1) should be well-suited to the drop back to this distance, who was second over this trip twice last year, including when narrowly denied by Adaay In Asia, whom he was giving over a stone to in weight. The winner subsequently completed a hat-trick at Ascot off a mark of 88, so he’s evidently well-treated off 66 here. That is the best form on offer in this race and, arriving here on the back of a good front-running fourth of 16 at Redcar last time, where he was only collared inside the final 100 yards or so, he might just have too much ammunition for these over this distance.

A chance is taken on the Iain Jardine-trained NEVER DARK (best price 25/1) who I know is now in the dark of late but he did run better than the beaten margin indicated last time at Ayr in a better race (beaten just four lengths in a bunch finish) and is now six pounds lower than when giving weight and a beating to Ventura Flame at Musselburgh last October. All of his three career wins have been off higher marks than today’s mark and he is nicely treated at the weights in this event. If able to get a good start again from stall nine, he could surprise a few at huge odds and exceed market expectations. He could easily bounce back and win this wide-open race despite his odds suggesting otherwise.

HARDY (best price 17/2) could never get competitive at Doncaster last time in a higher grade event than this but ran a good race in this grade on his penultimate start at Beverley when fourth and is a pound lower this time round. He has now reached the frame four times off higher marks over this trip, twice at Beverley, which have been his best performances, and this course a has a lot of similarities. With Oliver Stammers booked to ride, who can offset his valuable three-pounds claim, he could be very competitive here
Hardy - 0.5pts e/w @ 17/2
