ALOOQAAL (best price 7/4) showed quite a lot of ability when trained by Mark Halford in Ireland, which includes a second to a subsequent winner who’s defied a mark of 88 since, and he made the perfect start for Mick Appleby on stable debut last time at this course. He travelled beautifully throughout and once he got to the front quite easily, he stuck to the task well to win with more in hand than the initial margin indicated. He should have lots more to come over this longer distance and, from a good draw in stall five, everything looks in place for this progressive three-year-old to make it two-from-two at this course with Ali Rawlinson, stable jockey to Mick, taking over in the saddle.

I am happy to oppose this favourite and I two participants. Firstly, MELODY OF LIFE (best price 9/2) who’s record on the all-weather reads 32313 and both his two starts over course-and-distance has resulted with a win and a third. He has produced three solid efforts in defeat since scoring at Leicester and ran well on his penultimate start at Chelmsford when third off a pound higher mark. Jim Crowley takes over in the saddle this time round and, with a good pace to aim at, he gets the win vote in this contest to hopefully extend his excellent record on this surface.

I wouldn’t rule out TOTAL COMMITMENT (best price 18/1) at a big price. He couldn’t land a blow at Windsor last time but the six-year-old loves this course in which he’s a four-time course winner and he defied a mark of 91 over this trip last year on the all-weather in a class-three event. He’s down to a mark of 87 and William Carver takes off a further three-pounds too, which basically puts him in this race off a mark of 84. His record in this grade or lower at this course reads 111, three wins from three starts! While all of his other efforts in defeat and wins here have been higher graded contests, whilst he also ran well at Southwell on his penultimate start when second in a class three off 88. I cannot understand why he’s such a big price, so while a lower draw would have been preferred, he makes plenty of each-way appeal at double-figure odds.

HEY MR (best price 9/2) has dropped to a very handy mark and drops into a class-five event for the first time since finishing a close-up third behind Raasel at Nottingham which is the best form on offer. He missed the break when last spotted but made good late progress to snatch fourth behind subsequent Great St Wilfred winner Intrinsic Bond and that is strong form in the context of this race. Back down in grade off a two-pounds career-low mark of 69, this might be the day to catch him under Lewis Edmunds.

TWILIGHT MADNESS (best price 8/1) is really consistent and has run well on his last four starts on the all-weather. He was actually sent off favourite for a class three event last time and while that didn’t materialise with success, in which he was only fourth, this is easier and he was right in behind Wonder Elzaam on his penultimate start at Chelmsford. He was getting two pounds from the former that day but meets that same rival on four pounds better terms in this contest. He is drawn well in stall two so, although the favourite could prove tough to beat, this four-year-old might be the one to give him plenty to think about and therefore gets the each-way vote.
