Leg 1 Selection: Mahrajaan

Ignoring a blip in the John Smith’s Cup here on his penultimate start, MAHRAJAAN has a consistent and progressive profile and he should run well in this race in first time cheekpieces. He has form figures of 31113302 in his career including a 3rd placed finish at York on his final start last season over 1m6f on soft ground. The four-year-old was only beaten a neck on his previous start at Newmarket off a mark of 97 and he should hold strong claims off only 2lbs higher for the in-form William Haggas yard.

Leg 2 Selection: Coltrane

Unfortunately with Stradivarius ruled out with a bruised foot this morning, there are only seven runners contesting this Group 2 Lonsdale Cup but the obvious selection is COLTRANE who has looked progressive so far this season. The Andrew Balding trained five-year-old finished second behind Cleveland in the Chester Cup on his reappearance before winning at Royal Ascot on his next start. He followed up that victory with a 10 length win in the Coral Marathon at Sandown before finishing 4th in the Goodwood Cup behind Kyprios, Stradivarius and Trueshan. He only had 3 ¼ lengths to turn around with Trueshan and he looks sure to be involved in the finish.

Leg 3 Selection: Noble Style

This looks a competitive renewal of the Gimcrack Stakes but preference goes to the unbeaten Godolphin colt NOBLE STYLE. The Charlie Appleby trained son of Kingman won a novice race at Ascot over 5f on his debut beating Walbank and the reopposing Royal Scotsman before defying a penalty to beat Mill Stream in a novice race at Newmarket on his next start. That rival ran with credit in the Acomb Stakes on Tuesday and although he faces some equally promising colts in this race, I expect him to be involved in the finish.

Leg 4 Selection: Royal Aclaim

The unbeaten ROYAL ACLAIM steps up markedly in class in this race but she looks a filly full of potential. The James Tate trained three-year-old won on her debut last season at Newcastle before winning a Bath novice on her reappearance easily by 3 ¼ lengths. She won easily over this course and distance last time in the listed City Walls Stakes putting in a good speed figure that day. She gets some handy allowances in this race being a three-year-old filly and I expect her to run well.

Leg 5 Selection: Amanzoe

The William Haggas stable are in good form currently and his progressive filly AMANZOE looks the obvious selection in this race. She has won four out of her previous five starts including at Ascot last time when winning at the Shergar Cup for Joanna Mason. A mark of 93 shouldn’t be beyond her and she should run well in this race with Tom Marquand back on board.

Leg 6 Selection: Salt Lake City

Aidan O’Brien sends over SALT LAKE CITY for the convivial maiden this year having finished an eyecatching 2nd on his debut at the Curragh 13 days ago. The well bred son of Galileo was stable second string under Wayne Lordan on his debut where he made good late headway to finish 2nd despite racing keenly in the early stages. He still holds entries for Group 1 races later in the season and he should run well with Ryan Moore taking over.
