Midnight Jewel got the job done over fences last time but I think he was beaten if the eventual runner-up hadn’t of made a complete mess of the last fence when just about in front and therefore preference is for PENS MAN (best price 7/2), who’s three-from-six in this sphere and his form looks far superior to what the former has achieved.

He was unlucky on his penultimate start when beaten a short head but made no mistake last time and the form of his Warwick win over Jony Max looks solid, as the second is now rated 113 in this sphere. On this evidence, he’s clearly well-treated off 108 despite competing off a career-high mark and Kevin Brogan takes off three-pounds, so he’s a major player. Cracking Find is feared most off a basement mark at a big price but he looked a shadow of his former-self last time and needs a huge revival.

BETTY’S BELLE (best price 4/1) beat subsequent Grade Two Aintree bumper third Lustinebella on debut and then ran well in a pair of Listed events at Cheltenham. Although she could only finish fourth when last spotted, she brings the best form into this race ahead of her hurdles debut and Ben Pauling has his team in pretty decent nick at the moment too.

If she takes to this sphere, which I think she will, I can see her going close to winning this for connections. She loves good ground, has form with some very good horses and is her trainer’s only representative on the card with Luca Morgan taking off an additional three-pounds. I think she’s a solid each-way choice with a fair chance of taking the spoils if she can advance her already smart bumper form.

HERITIER (best price 7/2) absolutely bolted up on his chase debut last year by sixteen lengths and while he wasn’t able to replicate that performance in his next two starts, he wasn’t beaten far at Warwick when last spotted despite not looking comfortable at the venue.

He drops in grade ahead of his return off the same mark here though and is open to further improvement, whereas a few of his rivals look exposed and need more in this class. I can see him running a big race under Craig Nichol, who has his only ride on the card.

KAUTO D’AMOUR (best price 15/2) seemed to lose interest for most of the race last time at Hexham but stayed on strongly once he woke up to take third. He wasn’t far off winning that race at the post in all honesty and connections will now apply the cheekpieces, which should perk him up a fair bit, and this long home straight should suit as he takes his time to warm up before the afterburners tend to kick in.

His penultimate second to Kinondo Kwetu is a really good piece of form, as the winner has won twice since and bolted up yesterday when I put him up as our nap, as he completed the four-timer. The winner is now rated 117+, so he’s undeniably well-handicapped off 99 here with Thomas Willmott claiming three-pounds. If he can keep his eye on the task, and keep himself interested mid-race, he could gain a first chase success.
